    McDougall, William (1871-1938)
Encyclopedia of Psychology Apr 06, 2001 by Margaret Alic
William McDougall was an experimental psychologist and theorist of wide-ranging interests. Above all, he believed in a holistic psychology that utilized every available tool for understanding the human psyche. He was the first to formulate a theory of human instinctual behavior, and he influenced the development of the new field of social psychology. Born in 1871, in Lancashire, England, the second son of Rebekah Smalley and Isaac Shimwell McDougall, a wealthy Scottish industrialist, McDougall was educated at a local private school and then at the Realgynmnasium in Weimar, Germany. Although his father wanted him to study law or work in the family businesses, his mother supported his desire to become a scientist. At 15, McDougall entered the university in Manchester, earning degrees in biology and geology. A scholarship took him to St. John's College of Cambridge University, where he received his B.A. in natural science in 1894. It was at Cambridge that McDougall became interested in the melding of biology and the social sciences. Another scholarship enabled him to study medicine at St. Thomas Hospital in London. He earned his medical degree in 1898, with specialties in physiology and neurology. He was awarded the Grainger Testimonial Prize for his research on muscle contractions. However, the work of William James inspired McDougall to pursue psychology.

McDougall, William
(b. June 22, 1871, Chadderton, Lancashire, Eng.d. Nov. 28, 1938, Durham, N.C., U.S.), British-born U.S. psychologist influential in establishing experimental and physiological psychology and author of An Introduction to Social Psychology (1908; 30th ed. 1960), which did much to stimulate widespread study of the basis of social behaviour. Physiological Psychology (1905), demonstrating the value of a thoroughgoing biological approach in place of the traditional philosophical approach. McDougall's well-known Introduction to Social Psychology developed a Darwinian theory of human behaviour based on the assumption of inherited instinct, or tendency, to note particular stimuli and to respond to them for the purpose of attaining some goal. Should response be delayed, an emotional reaction follows. Diversification and stabilization of response result from learning. A classic work, Body and Mind (1911), subtitled A History and Defense of Animism represented the kind of espousal of unpopular causes that increasingly tended to isolate McDougall from colleagues.

McDougall, William
(b. Jan. 25, 1822, near York, Upper Canadad. May 29, 1905, Ottawa), one of the fathers of Canadian Confederation who later served unsuccessfully as lieutenant governor of the Northwest Territories. McDougall practiced law as a solicitor, being called to the bar in 1862. As one of the leaders of the "Clear Grit," or radical wing of the Reform Party, he founded in 1850 the North American, a newspaper that expressed the radicals' political views. This paper was absorbed by The Globe (Toronto) in 1857, when McDougall became an associate of The Globe 's publisher George Brown, the Liberal Party leader. The following year McDougall was elected to the legislature of the united province of Canada. He was appointed commissioner of crownlands in the John Sandfield Macdonald-Louis Victor Sicotte administration in 1862, and in 1864 he became provincial secretary. McDougall was removed from office in 1869 and soon lost political influence. After retiring from public life, he resumed his legal practice in 1873. Published: Saturday, June 5, 2010
With immense sorrow we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great grandfather on May 30/10. Born May 28/24 in Mac Gregor, Manitoba to Donald and Helen McDougall, he was one of nine children. In his early teen years he assisted his father with the family tinsmith business. In 1941 he enlisted with the army becoming a member of the Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment, serving in England, Normandy, Holland, Belgium, France, and Germany taking part in the D-day invasion. These years had a profound effect on the rest of his life. He remained a member of the legion till his passing. After his return from overseas he continued the sheet metal trade in Winnipeg, Brandon, Thunder Bay, Timmins and Toronto eventually retiring in Barrie. Bill had also served as business agent for Sheet Metal Workers Local 397 in Thunder Bay.
Dad devoted his life to his family. He was known as a quiet, kind, and gentle man, always open minded, never judgmental. To his family, his wise advice gained from his life experiences will be greatly missed. In his passing, dad leaves to mourn his loyal wife Myrtle. Married 59 years ago in Winnipeg, they proudly raised a family of 3 children. Dad is survived by daughter Lorene Mc Dougall of Barrie, daughter and son-in-law Janice and David Crane of Barrie, son and daughter-in-law Donald and Cleo Mc Dougall of Thunder Bay, sister and brother -in-law Viola and Wayne Beach of Elm Creek, Manitoba. Dad had one grandchild Vanessa, whom he loved dearly. Vanessa and husband Corey also gave him the gift of 2 grandchildren Mackenzie and Jadyn Beamish and although weak in later years Dad enjoyed watching in awe as they grew with their boundless energy and antics as little people. Dad will be sadly missed.
