Canku Ota (Many Paths) An Online Newsletter Celebrating Native America May 17 , 2003 - Issue 87 Story of the Rabbits Myths and Legends of the Sioux McLaughlin, Marie L. (1916) The Rabbit nation were very much depressed in spirits on account of being run over by all other nations. They, being very obedient to their chief, obeyed all his orders to the letter. One of his orders was, that upon the approach of any other nation that they should follow the example of their chief and run up among the rocks and down into their burrows, and not show themselves until the strangers had passed. This they always did. Even the chirp of a little cricket would send them all scampering to their dens. One day they held a great council, and after talking over everything for some time, finally left it to their medicine man to decide. The medicine man arose and said: "My friends, we are of no use on this earth. There isn't a nation on earth that fears us, and we are so timid that we cannot defend ourselves, so the best thing for us to do is to rid the earth of our nation, by all going over to the big lake and drowning ourselves." This they decided to do; so going to the lake they were about to jump in, when they heard a splashing in the water. Looking, they saw a lot of frogs jumping into the lake.

Recreating Me, Back in History
Designed especially for you by your teachers, Mrs. Marshall and Ms. Bluemel
Introduction
This Web Quest has been developed so that you, a child of the 21st century, who eats microwave popcorn, roller blades, wears blue jeans and a T-shirt, can try on the life of a Pioneer or Native American child back in the 19th century.
What did you wear?
What did you like to eat?
Describe your home.
Did you have any fun?
What were your jobs?
Were there any problems you had to solve?
Task
Your task is to recreate yourself as either a Pioneer boy, Pioneer girl, Native American boy, or a Native American girl, and to then develop a presentation that introduces your 19th century self to your 21st century classmates!
Presentation Requirements
1. Create an eight slide Power Point presentation to introduce your 19th century self to the class.
2. Create and explain a Venn diagram that illustrates the similarities and differences between your real self of today and your recreated self of yesteryear.
3. Dress in clothing appropriate to your character while giving your presentation.

Our oral history is intertwined with our storytelling. We have been able to keep our traditions alive and to teach valuable lessons through the use of examples that occur within our traditional stories. The use of non-violence in raising children has remained a central aspect of child rearing, and our stories emphasize learning from example rather than through punitive means.

The Journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition briefly mention a meeting with the Teton Dakota Indians along the Missouri river. A conference with some of the leaders is described, as well as some troubles experienced from the Indians curiosity. Brief mention is made of the character of some Dakota leaders and the type of villages in which they lived. This is a secondary account based on the original journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Barton, .Winifred W. John P, Williamson: A Brother to the Sioux . (N.Y: Flemming H. Revell, 1919).
This biography of an early missionary among the Dakotas describes the work of his father and Stephen R. Riggs at the first Minnesota mission, especially their translation of the Bible into Slouan. Young Williamson was raised at the mission with Indian children, and became involved in the events of the Minnesota outbreak of 1862 and the subsequent suppression of the eastern tribes. There is some description of the life of the Dakotas at Crow Creek, at Santee Agency in Nebraska, and Yankton Agency near Ft. Randall. in the 1860's. Brown, Joseph L.

David Balfour has never had an adventure. He has never spent a night camping in the Scottish Highlands. He has never sailed the high seas. He has never fought in a battle. In fact David Balfour has never even left home. All he knows is a quiet country life. All this changes after the death of his parents. He suddenly learns that he, David Balfour, is a man of wealth and standing, and that he is not destined for a simple life after all. All he needs to do to assume this new station in life is to travel to the town of Cramond, Scotland, to collect his inheritance from his father's younger brother, an uncle he had not even known existed. But David soon discovers that this is not as simple as it sounds, as he struggles to survive and outwit his treacherous uncle in this classic adventure story. Original oil paintings by N. C. Wyeth capture the vitality of Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless tale of fortune, camaraderie, betrayal, and independence.
