John Charles McNeill, Songs, Merry and Said
John McNeill studied at Whiteville Academy and held various jobs, including a teaching stint in Georgia, before he entered Wake Forest College in 1894. At Wake Forest, McNeill wrote poetry, edited a literary journal, obtained his bachelor's and masters degress, and studied law. He briefly served on the faculties at Wake Forest and Mercer University. At the age of twenty-six, McNeill opened a law office in Lumberton, North Carolina and acquired a proprietary interest in Argus , a weekly newspaper. He eventually moved to Laurinburg and was elected to the state legislature. His poetry was published in various national magazines. John Shaw Collection Notes on Authors As he built his collection, John Shaw compiled a large number of notes concerning the authors of children's materials and poetry. These notes were primarily biographical in nature and were sometimes used to justify the inclusion of a certain author in the Collection. This finding aid is a valuable tool in identifying a large portion of the authors whose works are included in the Shaw Collection. The Shaw Collection is in the process of being cataloged, and many of the works of the authors listed below are at the present moment uncataloged. As works are cataloged, this finding aid will be updated to provide the user with the call number of materials representative of a certain author. Beside each author's entry below, a call number will appear preceded by "CL" The notes included in this collection are arranged alphabetically by author's last name or by subject. To find a particular author quickly, use the Find or equivalent command that is common in most web browsers. Shaw Box 1605 Folder 1
