    Melanchthon, Philip
Melanchthon, Philip (m u u n) [ key Loci communes (1521) he made the first systematic presentation of the principles of the Reformation and so clarified the new gospel to those outside the movement. He served as mediator between Luther and the humanists, tempering the Protestant disapproval of worldly culture. He represented Luther at many conferences. At the Marburg Conference he opposed Huldreich Zwingli , and at the Diet of Augsburg (1530) he wrote and presented the Augsburg Confession (see creed ). Melanchthon was more conciliatory than Luther, as evidenced by his friendship with John Calvin after Luther's death and by his willingness to compromise on doctrinal issues. Luther had great confidence in Melanchthon as his successor, but Melanchthon was ill-suited for leadership. For his powerful role in creating the German schools, Melanchthon is known as preceptor of Germany. His Loci communes appeared in a modern critical edition and translation by Charles Leander Hall (1944).

Melanchthon, Philip (
Melanchthon, Philip , Protestant Reformer, born in the Palatinate of the Rhine ; was the scholar of the German Reformation , and a wise friend of Luther's, having come into contact with him at Wittenberg , where he happened to be professor of Greek ; he wrote the first Protestant work in dogmatic theology , entitled “Loci Communes,” and drew up the “ Augsburg Confession ”; the sweetness of temper for which he was distinguished, together with his soberness as a thinker , had a moderating influence on the vehemence of Luther, and contributed much to the progress of the Reformation ; he was the Erasmus of that movement, and combined the humanist with the Reformer, as George Buchanan did in Scotland Definition taken from The Nuttall Encyclopædia , edited by the Reverend James Wood (1907) Mekhong Melanesia Web fromoldbooks.org

Black Earth Boy
Five hundred years ago, in 1497, five years after Columbus' first voyage, Philipp Schwarzerd was born in Southern Germany. He was a brilliant boy who received his B. A. from the University of Heidelberg when only twelve and received his Master of Arts from Tübingen when only seventeen. He had a great facility with ancient languages; he could speak Latin and Greek better than his native German. His uncle called him Melanchthon, Greek for "black earth," which was the German meaning of his name. He was built small and was somewhat timid, but his blue eyes were honest and filled with intellectual curiosity. Inseparable Friends
When he was twenty-one, Melanchthon became Professor of Greek at the new University of Wittenberg. It was only ten months after Luther had posted his famous theses on the church door in Wittenberg. Melanchthon became totally devoted to Martin Luther, and a great friendship developed between the two. Both men sensed that God's Providence had a special mission for them to do together. Melanchthon venerated Luther as a father, while Luther deeply respected Melanchthon and learned from him. Melanchthon said he would rather die than be separated from Luther.... Martin's welfare is dearer to me than my own life. Even so, the two reformers were quite different. Martin Luther wrote:
