Source Notes
Petitallot quotes B.C., Cadran No.31, 6/1996 Note from Patrice: the record shows: ‘’On the 6 Vendémiaire (*), year XII of the Republic, noted at 5 o’clock, born yesterday at 10 pm in Paris, Carré Ste Geneviève number 7, Panthéon division, son of Jean-François Léonov MÉRIMÉE, painter and of Anne [...] MOREAU his wife’’. According to my conversion table, the 5 Vendémiaire of year XII corresponds to the 28th . This date has also been added to the record. But the Encyclopedia of Authors (Bouquins) indicates September 27 !" (*) Note : Vendémiaire was the first month of the Republican calendar, it corresponds to September 22 up to October 21 in our gregorian calendar.

Cromwell (1822); his close friend the novelist Stendhal encouraged him in this literary direction. A collection of his plays, appeared in 1825. Indulging his taste for mystification, he presented them as translations by a certain Joseph L'Estrange of the work of a Spanish actress. His next hoax was La Guzla (1827), by "Hyacinthe Maglanowich," ballads about murder, revenge, and vampires, supposedly translated from the Illyrian. Both works deceived even scholars of the day. La Jacquerie (1828), 36 dramatic scenes about a peasant insurrection in feudal times, and the novel La Chronique du temps de Charles IX (1829), concerning French court life during war and peace. "Mateo Falcone" (1833), a father kills a son for betraying the family honour. The collection (1833) was followed by his most famous novellas: Colomba (1840), the story of a young Corsican girl who forces her brother to commit murder for the sake of a vendetta, and

GRAVE LOCATION Cannes, Alpes-Maritimes: Cimetire Protestant du Grand-Jas , 205 avenue de Grasse (Cimetire anglais, 6e Alle)
Prosper Mrimee was the only child in an anglophile and free-thinking family. He studied Law in Paris (1819-1823), but also learned and Greek, Spanish, English and Russian. He translated many Russian books for the first time to french. He wrote his first play "Cromwell" in 1822. It was never published and he destroyed the manuscript. Also in 1822 he became friends with Stendhal.
Mrime had an affair with milie Lacoste, who had been the lover of Joseph Bonaparte as well. When her husband Flix Lacoste intercepted one of his letters he challenged Mrime for a duel. In February, 1828 the duel took place and Mrime was wounded three times.
In 1830 he became friends with the Countess de Montijo and he stated later that she was the inspiration for his novel "Carmen" (1845). In 1833 he had a one night stand with George Sand. Mrime was a keen archaeologist and in 1834 he was appointed inspector of historical monuments. He held this position until 1860. In 1836 Valentine Delessert became his mistress. Their affair lasted until the mid forties and in 1854 she returned the letters that she had received from him.
His story "La Vnus d'Ille" (1837) is a horror story about a statue that seems to come to life. In 1841 he rediscovered the tapestries of The Lady and the Unicorn at the Chteau de Boussac. George Sand immediately brought them to the attention of the public in her writings.
