The Builder Magazine June 1928 - Volume XIV - Number 6 A Militia of Mercy By BRO. R.J. NEWTON, Texas BEGINNING in December, 1921, at the Annual Communication of the M. W. Grand Lodge of Texas, an effort has been made to unite the forty-nine Masonic Grand Jurisdictions of the United States, and other Masonic bodies, in a national humanitarian service organization to provide home relief and hospitalization for tuberculous Freemasons and tuberculous members of Masonic families. More than six years have passed and the effort has not succeeded. When it is remembered that American Freemasonry did not unite during the World War for welfare work among the soldiers, at home and abroad, perhaps the failure to secure united action by the Craft in this work of salvaging sick men, women and children, who have some claim upon the Fraternity, cannot be charged to those who have worked for years in the face of heavy odds and every discouragement, to arouse the Craft to a recognition of the need for unity of action against tuberculosis, the greatest enemy of the American home today. A strong sentiment has developed among the leaders of the Fraternity against any kind of national Masonic association, or organization. Perhaps they have good reason for such sentiment and we have no space to devote to argument to meet their opinions. The sentiment of the rank and file, the great inarticulate mass of American Freemasonry, may differ from the leaders' wishes and opinions, but it is difficult to secure any expression of their desires.

All praise to the women of America! Please accept my very best wishes for the success of your organization. [signed] John J. Pershing. Introduction I have seldom yielded so willingly to a request for my written views as I do in this instance, when my valued friend, the master journalist, Melville E. Stone, has asked me, on behalf of the Book Committee, to write an introduction for "The Defenders of Democracy." Needless to say, I comply all the more readily in view of the fact that the book in which these words will appear is planned by the ladies of the Militia of Mercy as a means of increasing the Fund the Society is raising for the benefit of the families of "their own men" on the battle-line. And what a theme! It demands a volume from any pen capable of doing it justice. For the present purposes, however, I approve strongly of a compilation which shall express the reasoned opinions of writers representing the allied nations

Illustrated by Frank Craig Published serially by Cosmopolitan Yesterday she was but a slip of a girl leading the uneventful life of a cashier in a little French cafe near the border of Belgium.
Today she is deeply involved in one of the most desperate struggles ever waged by the secret systems of Europe. Such is the suddenness with which the "Girl Philippa" is thrust by fate into the center of the momentous events which precede the European War.
In this splendid romance of war and love and adventure, Mr. Chambers returns to the style of his novels of Franco-Prussian war. An English officer, an American artist, a sister of charity, and a "Girl Philippa" are the chief figures in the story which chronicles the daring attempt to steal the secret of the famous Harkness shell.
Dramatic incident piles on incident with bewildering rapidity, and there is always that delightful touch of romance which has made Mr. Chambers a favorite.

AMERICAN WOMEN AND THE WORLD WAR BY IDA CLYDE CLARKE AUTHOR OF "RECORD NO. 33" D. APPLETON AND COMPANY
    NEW YORK LONDON
A poor Scandinavian woman in Iowa cheerfully signed a food pledge card, believing it meant that the Government agents would confiscate her canned fruits and vegetables, and asking only for more time so that she could get more done for her country. To this patriotic, self-sacrificing woman, and to many, many other in quiet homes, far from the vast sweep of the world's tragic events, whose names do not appear in this or any other written record, I dedicate this book. The purpose of this book is twofold: first, to discover to American women themselves their tremendous opportunities and responsibilites in the present world conflict; second, to record in a form that is in some degree permanent the actual beginnings of the greatest massed effort of women the world has ever known. History has not been attempted, because history has not yet been made; events of engaging interest, often of international import, follow each other with lightning-like rapidity, and scarcely seem a situation be described before one more vital, more interesting develops. But if this book shall serve as an inspirtion, or shall form the groundwork of a future history of woman's part in the war, one of its chief purposes will have been accomplished. I wish particularly to emphasize one fact. The basis of the story I have used of the work in the various states is the organization of the Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense. In every state, the work of individual organizations has been of supreme value-the Federated Clubs, Daughters of the American Revolution, Young Women's Christian Association, Woman's Christian Temperance Union, Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teachers Association, Council of Jewish Women, National League for Woman's Service, and scores of other great organizations of women have worked intelligently, unceasingly, and to fine purpose, in every state. But in each
