BIOGRAPHICAL INTRODUCTION. Rufus Wilmot Griswold On the ninth day of December, 1608, John Milton was born in London. It was near the close of the golden age of England. Spenser had been dead ten years. Shakspeare was alive, but had ceased to write. Bacon was in the meridian of his power, but was known already to be one of the meanest of mankind, and neither his genius nor his station secured respect. The father of Milton had been disinherited for becoming a Protestant; but not until the completion of his studies at Oxford, where he was distinguished for his scholarship, taste and accomplishments. Deprived of his patrimony, he adopted the profession of a scrivener, in the practice of which he was so successful as to be able to give his son a liberal education, and at an early age to retire with a competence into the country. The instruction of Milton was carefully attended to: his private tutor was thomas young, a Puritan minister, who remained with him until compelled on account of his religious opinions to leave the kingdom. In 1624, soon after entering upon his sixteenth year, he was sent to Cambridge, where he was committed to the tuition of Mr. Chappell, afterwards a bishop, and the reputed author of The Whole Duty of Man . He had already made astonishing progress in learning. He was familiar with several languages, and with the most abstruse books in philosophy. Before he was eighteen, he studied critically the best Greek and Roman authors, and wrote more elegant Latin verses than were ever before produced by an Englishman.

His work is generally regarded as surpassed only by Shakespeare. He was the son of a scrivener, one of six kids of whom three lived. He was a beautiful child with a good education who continued on to Cambridge where he lived so chaste a life that he was given the nickname of "lady." He lived at home from 1632-1638 when his mom died. As a gentleman, he traveled for a year. Puritanical and serious, he married 17-year-old Mary in early 1643. She left him one month later but returned in 1644. They had four kids, the first born in July 1646. One of the boys died and after the fourth birth in May 1652, Mary died. A tutor and writer, Milton was generally beset by money problems. He married his second wife on 11/22/1656 and was widowed a second time when she died in childbirth 15 months later. He married his third and last wife in February 1663; a young sensible girl, Elizabeth Minshull, who made his last years comfortable.

MILTON, JOHN: . He was originally destined to a ministerial career, but his independent spirit led him to "prefer a blameless silence before the sacred office of speaking bought and begun with servitude and forswearing." He spent five quiet years at Horton in Buckinghamshire, reading and writing. To this period belong and Il Penseroso, Arcades, Comus , and Lycidas, all breathing the lofty spirit of his religious convictions. In 1638 and 1639 he traveled on the continent, coming into contact with such men as Grotius, Galileo, and Lucas Holete (q.v.), but was recalled by a rumor of the outbreak of the armed struggle for liberty at home. The next twenty years of his life were devoted almost entirely to prose work in the service of the Puritan cause. In 1641 and 1642 appeared his tractates Of Reformation touching Church Discipline in England, Of Prelatical Episcopacy, the two defenses of Smectymnuus, and The Reason of Church Government Urged against Prelaty. With frequent passages of real eloquence lighting up the rough controversial style of the period, and with a wide knowledge of ecclesiastical antiquity, he struck weighty blows at the intolerant High-church party which seemed to dominate the Church of England. The ill-success of his first marriage, with the daughter of a Royalist squire in Oxfordshire, who left him in a month, led him to write four tracts dealing with divorce, the first entitled The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce

NoCC (Of) Education: John Milton`s Tractate By John Milton Introductory Note Introductory Note Next Introductory Note Mr. Samuel Hartlib, to whom the following letter was addressed, was the son of a Polish merchant of German descent and an English mother. He lived in London during a large part of his life, and was actively interested in a vast number of educational and philanthropic schemes. It appears from the "Tractate" itself that he had requested Milton to put into writing some of the ideas on the education of a gentleman which they had from time to time touched on in conversation; and the present treatise is the result. This is indeed, as Milton confesses, "not a bow for every man to shoot in"; but as an ideal it is rich in both stimulus and practical suggestion.
