Mitchell, S. Weir,
in full SILAS WEIR MITCHELL (b. Feb. 15, 1829, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S.d. Jan. 4, 1914, Philadelphia), American physician and author who excelled in novels of psychology and historical romance. After study at the University of Pennsylvania and Jefferson Medical College (M.D., 1850), Mitchell spent a year in Paris specializing in neurology. As an army surgeon during the American Civil War, he became well known for his "rest cure." His war experiences were the basis for "The Case of George Dedlow" (1866), a story about a quadruple amputee notable for its psychological insights and realistic war scenes. He wrote some 170 medical monographs on topics ranging from snake venom to neurasthenia and published short stories, poems, and children's stories anonymously. Of later novels perhaps his most notable are: Roland Blake Hugh Wynne Circumstance Constance Trescott (1905), and The Red City Related Propaedia Topics: Nineteenth-century literature The novel

"Fat and Blood An Essay on the Treatment of Certain Forms of Neurasthenia and Hysteria"
Two days after her arrival my
friend Dr. Buzzard saw her with me, and, after a careful and prolonged
electrical examination, came to the conclusion that contractility
existed in all the affected muscles, and that the paralysis was purely
functional. I could find no evidence in the pelvis of the abscess, the
uterus being perfectly mobile, and apparently healthy. After a few days' rest the treatment was commenced on October 16, the patient being isolated in lodgings with a nurse of my own choosing; and this was the only difficulty I had with her, since she naturally felt acutely the separation from the faithful attendant who had nursed her during her long illness. Her friends agreed not to have communication with her of any sort. It is needless to give the details of the treatment in this and the following cases. A mere abstract will suffice to indicate the

20. The Yellow Wallpaper
Mitchell, S. Weir. “From Wear and Tear, or Hints for the Overworked.” The Yellow Wallpaper. Ed. Dale M. Bauer. Boston/New York Bedford/St. Martin’s, 1998.
http://www.msu.edu/~hartma35/wallpaper.htm
In the late nineteenth century, after the American social and economic shift commonly referred to as the Industrial Revolution had changed the very fabric of American society, increased attention was paid to the psychological disorders that apparently had steamed up out of the new smokestacks and skyscrapers in urban populations (Bauer, 131). These disorders were presumed to have been born out of the exhaustion and wear and tear of industrial society (Bauer, 131-132). An obvious effect of these new disorders was a slew of physicians and psychiatrists advocating one sort of cure or another, although the rest cure popularized by the physician S. Weir Mitchell was the most embraced (Bauer, 131; Saur, 151-152). However, while the rest cure for men involved physical exercise and leisure activities, the cure for women was a suffocating slice of seclusion, bed rest, and no intellectual activity (Bauer, 131). In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, neurasthenia was recognized as a psychological, rather than a physiological, ailment. Although this transition helped the new green fields of psychology and psychiatry to blossom and brought attention to the work of Sigmund Freud, it did not change the gendered nature of the disease nor did it change the social status of women (Bauer, 131-132). It may be that the failure of such a dramatic change in thought to recognize exactly what was causing depression in women was even more frustrating to Gilman than was the original assumption that melancholic depression was a physical disease caused by the weak and inferior bodies of women.
