NEW JELLY CAT Now In Stock Home Hallmark Ornaments By Series Colorway Ornaments Hallmark Colorway Ornaments What are colorways? Colorways are Hallmark Keepsake ornaments that are painted differently than the same ornament in the Hallmark Keepsake ornament line. These items are specially produced by Hallmark and are often used as incentives or prizes at Hallmark events such as Premiere. Depending upon their designated use they are produced in small quantities compared to the ornaments in the regular line. Secondary market values for colorways are dependant on a number of factors - how many were produced, how hard were they to obtain and the popularity of the "base" ornament. Although most of the colorway boxes are the regular line box with a small gold sticker in the upper corner denoting Colorway the first few were packaged in just the regular line box with no sticker or designation that the ornament inside was different in any way. Title: Miss Philly Firkin, The China-Woman
Author: Mary Russell Mitford [ More Titles by Mitford
In Belford Regis, as in many of those provincial capitals of the south of England, whose growth and importance have kept pace with the increased affluence and population of the neighbourhood, the principal shops will be found clustered in the close, inconvenient streets of the antique portion of the good town; whilst the more showy and commodious modern buildings are quite unable to compete in point of custom with the old crowded localities, which seem even to derive an advantage from the appearance of business and bustle occasioned by the sharp turnings, the steep declivities, the narrow causeways, the jutting-out windows, and the various obstructions incident to the picturesque but irregular street-architecture of our ancestors. Miss Philadelphia's was therefore a well accustomed shop, and she herself was in appearance most fit to be its inhabitant, being a trim, prim little woman, neither old nor young, whose dress hung about her in stiff regular folds, very like the drapery of a china shepherdess on a mantel-piece, and whose pink and white complexion, skin, eyebrows, eyes, and hair, all tinted as it seemed with one dash of ruddy colour, had the same professional hue. Change her spruce cap for a wide-brimmed hat, and the damask napkin which she flourished in wiping her wares, for a china crook, and the figure in question might have passed for a miniature of the mistress. In one respect they differed The china shepherdess was a silent personage. Miss Philadelphia was not; on the contrary, she was reckoned to make, after her own mincing fashion, as good a use of her tongue as any woman, gentle or simple, in the whole town of Belford.

Evelyn Waugh
Anecdote...
Once, when he had behaved with particular rudeness to a young French intellectual at a dinner party in Paris at the home of Nancy Mitford, Miss Mitford, angry at his social brutality, asked him how he could behave so meanly and yet consider himself a believing and practicing Catholic. "You have no idea," Waugh returned, "how much nastier I would be if I was not a Catholic. Without supernatural aid I would hardly be a human being."
Biographical Note...
Evelyn Waugh was a British novelist. His novels "Decline and Fall" (1928) and "Vile Bodies" (1930) established him as a social satirist. After his conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1930, religious themes played an increasing part in such novels as "Brideshead Revisited" (1945). Later books include his wartime trilogy—"At Arms" (1952), "Officers and Gentlemen" (1955), and "Unconditional Surrender" (1961).

The Season
The Adelphi fall season started with Boys Together , an "original drama" by Haddon Chambers and Comyns Carr billed in the Times as an "innovation in melodrama" (27 August 1896). The innovation was that greed was not the reason for the villain's dastardly behavior, but unreasoning, undying hatred. The plot still had a persecuted hero, some ambitious settings, and the climactic confrontation between hero and villain at the climax. While the play was described as a praiseworthy attempt to leave the beaten path of conventional melodrama, it failed to convince the critics. The author's work was compared unfavorably with Henry Pettitt in his former successes. They especially took Comyns Carr to task, accusing him of letting material considerations take precedence over those of art. The story concerns the fortunes of two men who had been to school together as boys (hence the title).
