Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) French courtier and author of ESSAIS (1572-80, 1588), which established a new literary form. Montaigne has remained the greatest exponent of the essay, a short piece that discusses the author's personal thoughts about a particular subject. His successors have followed him in the use of the self as subject, the replacement of logical thought by free association, and the use of essay as "a literary device for saying almost everything about anything" (Aldous Huxley). "And though nobody should read me, have I wasted time in entertaining myself so many idle hours in so pleasing and useful thoughts? In moulding this figure upon myself, I have been so often constrained to temper and compose myself in a right posture, that the copy is truly taken, and has in some sort formed itself; painting myself for others, I represent myself in a better colouring than my own natural complexion. I have no more made my book than my book has made me: 'tis a book consubstantial with the author, of a peculiar design, a parcel of my life, and whose business is not designed for others, as that of all other books is." (from The Essays of Montaigne , tr. by Charles Cotton, edited by William Carew Hazlitt, 1877)

Biography
French writer and Renaissance man, the author of "Essais," 1595, translator of "The Natural World" and "Apologie de Ramon Sebond," 1569 and "Journal De Voyage," posthumously published in 1744. He is most noted for being the creator of a new literary genre to accommodate what would later be called "the dialogue of the mind with itself," or the modern essay. Like his father before him, Montaigne was eventually elected mayor of Bordeaux, a position he held from 1581-1585. While almost nothing is known about his wife, Montaigne wrote extensively about his friendship with fellow parliamentarian Etienne de la Boetie in his second book of "essai," entitled published "On Friendship" in 1580, "I am better at friendship than anything else," he wrote in one of his earliest essays, and it was the loss of Boetie's friendship through his untimely death that caused Montaigne to withdraw inside himself and write a third book of essays that was published in 1588. Montaigne's last essays were known for his acceptance that life is good, and for his conviction that man must discover his own nature in order to live with others in peace and dignity.

Montaigne, in France , on 28 Feb., 1533; d. there, 13 Sept., 1592. His great-grandfather had been a Bordeaux merchant of wines salt fish, etc., and it was he who purchased the estate of Montaigne. His father entered the army and married Antoinette de Louppes or Lopes , of Jewish origin, and for two years was mayor of Bordeaux . At an early age Michel had a German tutor, who was obliged to speak to him in Latin only. At the age of six and a half he was sent to the College of Guyenne at Bordeaux , where he remained seven years. It is believed that he studied logic and dialectics for two years at the Bordeaux Faculty of Arts , with Marc-Antoine de Muret as tutor. He afterwards studied law , possibly at Bordeaux , more probably at Toulouse . Having become counsellor at the Cour des Aides of , he was soon incorporated like his colleagues in the Parlement of Bordeaux . But the new counsellor had no liking for his profession, and he was often absent from the Parlement. From 1561 to 1563 he attended the court. From 1559 he knew and his elder by six years; but death soon separated them (1563).

MONTAIGNE, MICHEL DE Natural Theology Essais Essais The Tempest It is difficult to know what Montaigne actually thought of the Jews, for this was a dangerous subject in those days of religious intolerance. Almost all his references to the Jews, however, show a sympathetic attitude. In the Essais I , chap. 14). But it is in the Travel Diary ( Journal de Voyage Essais Essais , converted to Protestantism and this, for a public figure such as Montaigne, was not an asset in the midst of the religious wars. As to his display of interest in Jewish life in Italy, it could well be that of a liberal humanistic non-Jew, keen as he was on heterodox, free, original ways of living and thinking, as manifested in various groups of outsiders, and unaffected by the current oppressive Church restrictions. Unless other manuscripts come to light, which is unlikely, the question remains open.

ESSAYS, by Michel de Montaigne
Montaigne, Michel de
French, 1533–1592
In 1571 at the age of 38 Michel de Montaigne , an aristocrat of the minor landed nobility, withdrew from public life to his château in southwestern France in order to devote his remaining years, in the company of the “Muses,” to a life of calm, freedom, and leisure, as well as respite from the civil wars of religion. Shortly thereafter he began writing what he called, by a somewhat strange name that was destined to have an immensely influential future, his Essais
His desire to write was also fired by the memory of his friendship with the late poet and political writer, Étienne de La Boétie. No longer able to converse or to correspond with his dearest friend, he felt the need to address his thoughts to others, to potential readers who might serve as surrogates for La Boétie. Thus the essay as he initially conceived it had something in it of both the letter to an ideal friend and the dialogue with an ideal friend, echoing two forms of discursive writing inherited from classical antiquity, two “forerunners” of the essay. This aspect goes a long way toward explaining the unique liveliness, the “irrepressible vivacity” (Virginia Woolf, 1925) of the Essais.

Introduction
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592 CE) developed the essay as a form of literature and with it provided a portrait of himself and his era. He was born in the family chateau near Bordeaux, France, and was given special training by his father who, until he was six, would not let him hear any other tongue than Latinthe language of learning. He was then sent to the College de Guienne at Bordeaux, famous at that time for humanism and unconventional religious ideas. At thirteen he left to study law. He became a counselor in the Bordeaux parliament in 1554 and was known to be present at sieges of some French cities in the period 1558-1562. He married in 1565 and succeed to the family estate when his father died in 1568. It was in this year that he published a French translation of Theologia Naturalis sive Liber Creaturarum Natural Theology or the Book of Creatures) by Raimond Sebond, a Spanish theologian who taught at Toulouse.
