Montaigne is known for inventing the essay. Although there are other authors who wrote in an autobiographical style on intellectual issues— Saint Augustine was an example from the ancient world—Montaigne was the first popularize the tone and style of what would become the essay form. He is renowned for his effortless ability to merge serious intellectual speculation with casual anecdotes and autobiography. Montaigne's massive work, the Essais, contains some of the most widely influential essays ever written, among them the essay "On Cannibals," where Montaigne famously defended the rights and dignity of native peoples, and "An Apology for Raymond Sebond," where he argued vehemently against dogmatic thinking. Montaigne is one of the most important French writers of the Renaissance, having a direct influence on writers the world over, from Shakespeare to Emerson , from Nietzsche to Rousseau In his own time, Montaigne was admired more as a statesman than as an author. His tendency to diverge into anecdotes and personal ruminations was seen as a detriment rather than an innovation, and his stated motto that "I am myself the matter of my book" was viewed by contemporary writers as self-indulgent.

Essays Replicating Petrarca's choice in De vita solitaria , Montaigne chose to dedicate himself to the Muses. In his library, which was quite large for the period, he had wisdom formulas carved on the wooden beams. They were drawn from, amongst others, Ecclesiastes , Sextus Empiricus, Lucretius, and other classical authors, whom he read intensively. To escape fits of melancholy, he began to commit his thoughts to paper. In 1580, he undertook a journey to Italy, whose main goal was probably to cure the pain of his kidney stones at thermal resorts. The journey is related in part by a secretary, in part by Montaigne himself, in a manuscript that was only discovered during the 18th century, given the title The Journal of the Journey to Italy , and forgotten soon after. While Montaigne was taking the baths near Pisa, he learnt of his election as Mayor of Bordeaux. He was first tempted to refuse out of modesty, but eventually accepted (he even received a letter from the King urging him to take the post) and was later re-elected. In his second term he came under criticism for having abandoned the town during the great plague in an attempt to protect himself and his family. His time in office was dimmed by the wars of religion between Catholics and Protestants. Several members of his family converted to Protestantism, but Montaigne himself remained a Catholic.

in Essais Essays ) established a new literary form. He was a skeptical student of himself and of humanity during the fanatical French religious wars of the later 16th century, and he spoke out for a human-centred morality. A brief treatment of Michel de Montaigne follows. For full treatment, see MACROPAEDIA: Montaigne Born into a family of the minor nobility, Montaigne was carefully tutored in the family chateau at Montaigne and received an excellent classical education. At age six he was sent to the College of Guyenne at Bordeaux, and he went on to study law at the University of Toulouse (1546-50). In 1557 he became conseiller at the parlement (high court) of Bordeaux. There he met another lawyer, When his father died in 1568, Montaigne inherited his title and the family chateau. In 1570 he resigned his judicial office, and in the following year he retired to Montaigne to devote himself to reading, writing, and meditation. He began to write the Essais in 1572; the first two books were published in 1580 and consist respectively of 57 and 37 chapters of varying length. The edition of 1588 contains a third book, and the edition of 1595 contains further additions. Montaigne traveled through Germany and Italy in 1580-81 and described his trip in the posthumously published
