64. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Thomas More
Biographical article on the Lord Chancellor of England, and martyr. Beheaded 1535

St. Thomas More
Saint knight , Lord Chancellor of England , author and martyr , born in London , 7 February, 1477-78; executed at Tower Hill, 6 July, 1535. He was the sole surviving son of Sir John More, barrister and later judge, by his first wife Agnes, daughter of Thomas Graunger. While still a child Thomas was sent to St. Anthony's School in Threadneedle Street, kept by Nicholas Holt, and when thirteen years old was placed in the household of Cardinal Morton Archbishop of Canterbury , and Lord Chancellor. Here his merry character and brilliant intellect attracted the notice of the archbishop , who sent him to Oxford , where he entered at Canterbury Hall (subsequently absorbed by Christ Church) about 1492. His father made him an allowance barely sufficient to supply the necessaries of life and, in consequence, he had no opportunity to indulge in "vain or hurtful amusements" to the detriment of his studies. At Oxford he made friends with William Grocyn and Thomas Linacre , the latter becoming his first instructor in Greek . Without ever becoming an exact scholar he mastered Greek "by an instinct of genius" as witnessed by Pace ( De fructu qui ex doctrina percipitur , 1517), who adds "his eloquence is incomparable and twofold, for he speaks with the same facility in Latin as in his own language". Besides the classics he studied

Tribute to Thomas Gibson
Also known as Greg from the hit abc comedy "Dharma and Greg",Thomas Gibson's character, 'Gregory Clifford Montgomery', is a straight laced U.S. attorney, married to wild and wacky Dharma (Jenna Elfman). Thomas is the youngest of four children, whose father left his mother when he was 6. Growing up, Thomas excelled in baseball, golf, swimming, soccer, and football, but like his character Greg, he always got mad at himself for not making the perfect shots. The same way Jenna is a lot like Dharma, Thomas shares Greg's need for perfection. "[Greg] resubmits things that don't work to a revised attack," Thomas says. "That's something I can identify with." His co-star Jenna Elfman (Dharma) agrees, "He's particular about certain things."
"He doesn't like it when things don't go right. But he's funny about it," she says, speaking of the way he went on about the problems he was having with his new Mercedes-Benz. It seems though, like his perfection paid off, as he's doing very well in his current role in "Dharma and Greg". "He has the perfect humor, with 100 percent leading-man sex appeal," says his Jenna Elfman, of why she picked him for the role of Greg. "He has a gentlemanliness and a sexiness and a humor and a charm, and you don't usually find [that] mix." Thomas Gibson's Stats Born on July 3rd (He's 36)

Brief notes on the architect Thomas Cubitt from Bob Speel.
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/speel/arch/cubitt.htm
Thomas Cubitt (1788-1855)
Thomas Cubitt was one of the earliest, and the most important, of the speculative builders who built up large areas of London from the early 19th Century. He came from a humble background - the son of a farmer - and worked as a ship's carpenter. He started building in around 1815, designing, laying out and building streets, squares, whole districts, employing a wide range of specialised craftsmen and architects (including his brother Lewis Cubitt) on his staff in order to be able to provide a 'one stop shop'. Among his work in London may be counted Belgravia, centred around Belgrave Square , Pimlico, much of Bloomsbury, and Blackfriars Bridge . Elsewhere, he build a similarly large development in Brighton called Kemp Town, and Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Top of page Architecture pages Full list of artists Home

77. African Music Encyclopedia: Thomas Mapfumo
Thomas Mapfumo (from African Music Encyclopedia)
http://www.africanmusic.org/artists/mapfumo.html
Thomas Mapfumo
Thomas Mapfumo , born in Marondera, Zimbabwe in 1945 is also sometimes called the Lion of Zimbabwe . He is responsible for blending traditional Shona mbira music with western instruments and a political message full of innuendo and traditional proverbs. He established the musical style, chimurenga (the Shona word for struggle). In the 1970s Zimbabwe's people fought a war of independence againt their white Rhodesian rulers. Out of that grew chimurenga which is based on the Shona majority's chiming, cyclical rhythms, patterns and melodies of the mbira resulting in a hypnotric almost trance-like music. Mapfumo took that traditional music and added electric guitars, horns, and a drum kit. With his electronic interpretations of traditional mbira music he became a huge star in Zimbabwe. Being that some of his lyrics addressed the struggle for independence the white Rhodesian government felt threatened by his popularity, As a result, in 1977, Mapfumo was detained in prison for 90 days because of his song Hokoya (Watch Out). He and his band, The Blacks Unlimited now tour widely. Don't miss them!

Dylan Marlais Thomas was born on October 27, 1914, in South Wales at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive in Swansea. His father was an English Literature professor at the local grammar school and would often recite Shakespeare to Thomas before he could read. He loved the sounds of nursery rhymes, foreshadowing his love for the rhythmic ballads of Hopkins Yeats , and Poe . Although both of his parents spoke fluent Welsh, Thomas and his older sister never learned the language, and Thomas wrote exclusively in English. Thomas was a neurotic, sickly child who shied away from school and preferred reading on his own. He read all of D. H. Lawrence 's poetry, impressed by vivid descriptions of the natural world. Fascinated by language, he excelled in English and reading but neglected other subjects. He dropped out of school at sixteen to become a junior reporter for the South Wales Daily Post By December of 1932, he left his job at the
