Musset's autobiographical The Confession of a Child of the Century ), if not entirely trustworthy, presents a striking picture of Musset's youth as a member of a noble family, well-educated but ruled by his emotions in a period when all traditional values were under attack. While still an adolescent he came under the influence of the leaders of the Romantic movement, Charles Nodier, Alfred de Vigny, and Victor Hugo, and produced his first work, Contes d'Espagne et d'Italie ("Stories of Spain and of Italy") in 1830. At the same time he became a dandy, one of the elegant Parisian imitators of "Beau" Brummell, and embarked on a life of hectic sexual and alcoholic dissipation. After the failure of his play nitienne (1830; "The Venetian Night"), Musset refused to allow his other plays to be performed but continued to publish historical tragedies e.g., Lorenzac

dedoxical empiricism Les Caprices de Marianne was written by Alfred de Musset in 1833 and followed by "Rolla", authorially subtitled "a symptom of the maladie du siècle". The poem, a grotesque, pathetic languorous sentient Wertherian whirl was written at the beginning of Musset's liaison with George Sand.

Musset, Alfred de , the premier poet of modern French literature , born in Paris of good parentage; wayward and impulsive in youth, he would settle to no occupation, till his already awakened taste for poetry receiving a powerful stimulus through contact with Victor Hugo, led him to embrace the profession of letters; two volumes of poetry were published before he achieved, in 1833, his first signal success with the dramas “André del Sarto” and “Les Caprices de Marianne”; in the same year began his famous liaison with George Sand q.v .), involving him in the ill-fated expedition to Venice , whence he returned in the spring of 1834 shattered in health and disillusioned; from one unhappy love intrigue he passed to another, seeking in vain a solace for his restless spirit , but reaping an experience which enriched his writings; “Confessions d'un Enfant du Siècle” appeared in 1836, and is a significant confession of his life at this time; two years later he was appointed librarian at the

Musset, Alfred de (Louis Charles Alfred de Musset) u key , French romantic poet, dramatist, and fiction writer. His first collection of poems, Contes d'Espagne et d'Italie (1829), exhibited a strong Byronic influence. Four years later he went to Italy with George Sand, but his infatuation with her resulted in disillusionment. Most of his poems appeared first in Revue des deux mondes; Fantasio (1834) and a series of comedies based on proverbs, including Il ne faut jurer de rien (1834) and On ne badine pas avec l'amour (1836). He also wrote some brilliant nouvelles, but from 1840 he passed rapidly into decline. The autobiographical novel (1836), gives an account of his affair with George Sand and reflects the disillusioned mood of many of his contemporaries. His correspondence with George Sand appeared in 1904, and his work was translated in The Complete Writings of Alfred de Musset (10 vol., 1905; rev. ed. 1907).

Alfred de Musset (1810-1857) French Romantic poet and playwright, remembered for his poetry. A love affair with the novelist George Sand between the years 1833 and 1835 inspired some of Musset's finest lyrics. Much influenced by Shakespeare and Schiller, Alfred de Musset wrote the first modern dramas in the French language. "How glorious it is, but how painful it is also, to be exceptional in this world!" (from La Merle Blanc Musset began his career as a poet and dramatist in 1828 with the publication of a ballad called 'A Dream'. His early poems won the approval of Victor Hugo , who accepted Musset in his Romantic literary circle Musset's parodic collection of poems in LES CONTES D'ESPAGNE ET D'ITALIE (1830) showed the influence of Lord Byron . In 1830, at the invitation of the director of the Théâtre de l'Odeon, Musset wrote LA NUIT VÉNETIENNE, the first of his plays to be produced. After the humiliating failure on the stage, Musset refused to allow his other plays than historical tragedies and comedies to be performed. This decision partly liberated him from the thoughts of "technique" he did not care whether the plays made an effect or no. At that time theatre, on the other hand, was for writers a good means to reach their audience. A theatre ticked was not so expensive than a book. Musset's relatively well-made books, which cost only 3.50 francs, still did not reach a public of petits-bourgeois, craftsmen, or workers, who earned little more than 4 francs per day.
