Patrick Nasmyth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Patrick Nasmyth , (7 January 1787 – 17 August 1831), was a Scottish landscape painter . He was the eldest son of the famous artist Alexander Nasmyth , whilst his younger brother, James , was a prominent engineer who gained notoriety as the inventor of the steam hammer Nasmyth was born in Edinburgh and was named after his father's patron, Patrick Miller. He developed an affinity for art at an early age and, on seeing this, his father took a keen interest in developing his son's talent. As a teenager Nasmyth lost the use of his right hand following an accident, forcing him to learn how to paint with his left. He also lost most of his hearing through illness. Much of Nasmyth's work, a great deal of which is undated, depicts his native Scotland, which he continued to paint even after moving to London in 1810. Like his father, he was heavily influenced by the Dutch masters of the 17th century, particularly Meindert Hobbema and Jacob van Ruysdael (a large number of works by both men were displayed in London galleries during Nasmyth's lifetime).

James Nasmyth was born in Edinburgh in 1808. From an early age James showed an interest and a talent for things mechanical and as a youth he was taken on as an apprentice by Henry Mawdsley, one of the leading engineers of the day.
It was on a walking tour to view the Liverpool-Manchester Railway, then recently opened, that James noticed the site at Patricroft that was to become the site for his foundry.
His inventions and improvements to machinery were many, the steamhammer being the best-known. He also designed a safety device that prevented accidents in moving molten metal. He did not take out a patent on this so that it could be copied without charge.
He also took a keen interest in art, astronomy and local government. He became Chairman of the Local Board of Health in 1854.
At the age of 48 he retired to Kent where he devoted his time to his interests. He died in 1890, having become a key figure in the history of engineering.

Nasmyth, James
(b . Aug. 19, 1808, Edinburgh, Scot.d. May 7, 1890, London, Eng.), British engineer known primarily for his invention of the steam hammer. Nasmyth showed an extraordinary mechanical inclination while still a schoolboy in Edinburgh, building successful model steam engines. For two years he worked in Henry Maudslay's machine shop in London and subsequently moved to Manchester, where rapid industrialization was in progress. In 1836 he began to build his own foundry near the junction of the Bridgewater Canal with the newly opened Liverpool and Manchester Railway. He made machine tools of all kinds along with a variety of steam-powered machines. Isambard Kingdom Brunel , when designing his steamship Great Britain, originally made plans for paddle wheels of exceptional size. Nasmyth solved the challenging problem of forging the drive shaft by designing and fabricating a powerful steam hammer, which he patented in 1842. Although the Great Britain was eventually furnished with screw propellers instead of paddle wheels, the steam hammer immediately became an important part of the metallurgical arsenal of the Industrial Revolution.
