Frank Norris was born in Chicago Illinois in 1870. His father, Benjamin, was a self-made Chicago businessman and his mother, Gertrude Glorvina Doggett, had a stage career. In 1884 the family moved to San Francisco where Benjamin went into real estate. In 1887 after the death of his brother and brief stay in London young Norris went to Académie Julian in Paris where he studied painting for two years and was exposed to the naturalist novels of Emile Zola . He attended the University of California, Berkeley

Frank Norris (1870-1902) , American author and journalist, wrote McTeague Professor Joseph LeConte and his natural history teachings would have a profound influence on Norris' works including Blix McTeague (1899) is a fascinating yet (at the time) controversial study into the life of the dentist McTeague and his moral downfall from the streets of San Francisco to the wastes of Death Valley, a worthy effort of the naturalism school. The highs and lows on the spectrum of human behavior were playing out all around Norris for which he took great interest. Frank Norris was born in Chicago, Illinois on 5 March 1870. His mother Gertrude Doggett was an actress, his father Benjamin Franklin Norris a wealthy jeweler. He studied art in Paris before attending the University of California at Berkeley (1890-1894) where he began his short but highly successful and prolific literary career. In 1900 he married Jeannette Norris Black. A man of contrasts, born in the East, Norris would soon adopt the West as his spiritual home, a member of the Bohemian Club of San Francisco during the days of the Gold Rush. He avidly studied

San Francisco, California Pen name Frank Norris Occupation Novelist , Writer Nationality American Notable work(s) The Epic of Wheat (unfinished) Benjamin Franklin Norris, Jr. (March 5, 1870 – October 25, 1902) was an American novelist during the Progressive Era, writing predominantly in the naturalist genre. His notable works include McTeague The Octopus: A California Story (1901), and The Pit (1903). Although he did not openly support socialism as a political system, his work nevertheless evinces a socialist mentality and influenced socialist and progressive writers such as Upton Sinclair . Like many of his contemporaries, he was profoundly influenced by the advent of Darwinism , and Thomas Henry Huxley's philosophical defense. Norris was particularly influenced by the optimistic thread of Darwinist philosophy taught by Joseph LeConte. Norris studied under LeConte while at the University of California Berkeley.
