C harles A. Eastman, Ohiyesa (Winner), Wahpeton Dakota (Eastern Woodland Sioux), 1858-1939. Physician, autobiographer, legend re-teller, essayist, lecturer.
C O hiyesa was first named Hakadah (the Pitiful Last One), because his mother died shortly after his brith, somewhere near Redwood Falls, in southwestern Minnesota, in 1858. His first volume of memoirs depicting his traditional life, raised by his Wahpeton grandmother does not make it clear that almost all this boyhood took place in Manitoba, Canada, after the band had fled U.S. Army and bounty-hunters, following the defeat of the Dakota uprising in Minnesota, in 1862. T his 19th-century ink drawing by an unidentified Canadian artist shows Minnesota Dakota refugees arriving in Canada. U ncheeda (Ohiyesa's grandmother) and several of his siblings lived in Manitoba, with other Minnesota Dakota refugees, from 1862 - 74 on the land of his uncle, Mysterious Medicine, who had a farm in wooded country in Manitoba, Canada. T hus most of the experiences he recounts of his traditional boyhood, his religious upbringing, the tales he heard, the ceremonies and festivals, actually occurred among the Minnesota Dakota exiles in Canada. Ohiyesa spent 11 of th 15 years of his traditional life there, mostly in Manitoba.

NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN QUOTES
The fruits of silence are self-control, courage, endurance, patience
and dignity.
~~Ohiyesa, Dakota~~
I think the Great Spirit is looking at all that is said here,
and for that reason I am talking the TRUTH.
~~Little Raven, Arapaho Leader~~
You told us to speak our minds freely. We now do it!
~~Little Turtle, Miami Chief, 1795~~
I am not talking anything badly or angrily, but simply the TRUTH.
~~Satanta, Kiowa~~ Great Spirit sees and hears everything, and he never forgets. ~~In-Mut-Too-Yah-Lat-Lat, Nez Perce~~ Give him to us and we promise you he shall never LIE again. ~~Tessouat, Ottawa Chief~~ To have a friend and to be TRUE under ANY and ALL trials is the “mark of a man.” ~~Ohiyesa, Santee Sioux~~ Our fathers gave us many laws - that it was a DISGRACE to tell a LIE; that we should speak only the TRUTH. ~~Chief Joseph, Nez Perce~~ Complaint is just toward friends who have failed in their duty; accusation is against enemies guilty of injustice! ~~Tecumseh, Miami Chief~~

      Dakota Enough?
Ohiyesa negotiated so many concerns, longings, and duties, and he was so grounded in his own self that did not fit into any one camp of thought on American Indian issues. Even while he was alive, people tried to pigeonhole him into a perspective that suited their views, reducing his complexity. He obviously ran into racism in the white world, and many wanted to portray him as the perfect "assimilated Indian", which he resisted. But he also encountered some hostility from his own people and from other American Indians of the time.
He was criticized by a minority as being an "apple" red on the outside, white on the inside or not Dakota or Indian enough, for varied reasons:

Ohiyesa (Charles Eastman), "The Soul of the Indian" Abstract: An outline of Sioux Indian moral practices drawn from Charles Eastman's The Soul of an Indian illustrates a specific duty ethics. ("Ohiyesa" is pronounced something like "Oh hee' yay suh":) 1. Why is silence such an essential part of character for the Sioux? 2. What sociological reasons can be provided for the relatively conservative sexual ethics of the Sioux? 3. What are the exceptions, pointed out by Ohiyesa, to the dishonor of stealing—why are these exceptions allowed? 4. What is the rationalization Ohiyesa relates for the killing of noncombatants (women and children) in war? ... 7. Why, according to Ohiyesa, was lying, at one time, a capital offense? Why is silence such an essential part of character for the Sioux?. Maintaining silence keeps body, mind, and spirit in equilibrium as speech tends to confuse and distract. With silence comes the character of self-control, courage, and reverence. Mind, body, and spirit remain calm but poised and readied. Language, whether spoken or thought, distorts not only the presentation of the self but also the self's intuitive perception of the world. What sociological reasons can be provided for the relatively conservative sexual ethics of the Sioux?

Ohiyesa At Wounded Knee
After having borne three sons and one daughter, Ohiyesa was Mary's last child, for she died giving birth to him, therefore the name "Hakadah" ("pitiful last") was given to him at birth. Later in childhood he received the name Ohiyesa (pronounced Oh hee' yay suh).
Ohiyesa was born February 19, 1858 near Redwood Falls, Minnesota. He was an author, physician, reformer and advocate. He was born to Many Lightnings, of the Dakota tribe and his wife Mary Nancy Eastman. Mary's father was Seth Eastman, whose paintings are very significant of Indian life among the Dakota and Ojibwa tribes of Minnesota. Seth, a white man, married Wakaninajinwin, daughter of Cloud Man, a Dakota chief.
During the Minnesota Uprising of the Dakotas in 1862-63, Ohiyesa was safely taken to relatives of his father in North Dakota and Manitoba. He was later reunited with his father, whom had changed his name to Jacob Eastman, and older brother John. They homesteaded in Dakota Territory. Ohiyesa then went by the name of Charles Alexander Eastman.
Pitiful was by far the last thing that Ohiyesa ever was. Thanks to the encouragement of his father, Ohiyesa obtained his education at mission and preparatory schools then went on to Dartmouth College where he graduated in 1887. Just a year later he earned his medical degree from Boston University.
