From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Alfred Ollivant (1874 – 1927) was an English novelist best known for his children's classic Bob, Son of Battle . Ollivant also wrote about a dozen other novels ranging from small-scale cautionary tales to grand historical epics. Alfred Ollivant was born in Manchester England , in 1874 and became an author after a horse-riding injury ending his brief military career. Bob, Son of Battle, his first novel, was published in 1898. Set in rural Cumbria , in northern England, the novel centers on a suspected sheepkilling collie Bob. Even though most of the book's dialogue is written in the Cumbrian dialect, it gained a popular following in the United States . Ollivant even published a sequel, Danny , in 1902. He was also a short story contributor to The Atlantic Monthly and the Boston Evening Transcript . Alfred Ollivant died in London on January 19, 1927.

OLLIVANT ALFRED ), bishop ; b. at Manchester 16 Aug. 1798 , son of William Ollivant of Manchester and Elizabeth his wife. He was educated at S. Paul's School London , and Trinity College Cambridge , where he had an outstanding academic career. Elected Fellow of his college, he took his M.A. in , and B.D. and D.D. in . In he was elected vice-principal of S. David's College Lampeter , and remained there till . For the next six years he was regius professor of divinity at Cambridge , and in he was appointed bishop of Llandaff , holding the see till his death at Llandaff on 16 Dec. 1882 . He was buried in the cathedral churchyard. He m. Alicia , daughter of lieutenant-general Spencer of Branley Grange Yorkshire , who, together with three sons, survived him. Ollivant put an end to the tradition of episcopal non-residence in Llandaff , restored the cathedral, built or restored 170 churches, and improved seventy parsonage houses in the diocese.

Lieutenant General Spencer of Bramley Grange was married to Charlotte ; he died in 1829. Children :
  • Reverend William Pakenham Spencer, admitted into Holy Orders as a deacon on 6th June. 1824. He was admitted to the priesthood on 27th February, 1825 and went on to become Rector of Starston in Norfolk in 1829. In 1831 he was made Deputy Lieutenant for the county of Norfolk. He died in 1845
