Tallente was seated at breakfast a few mornings later when his wife paid him an unexpected visit. She responded to his greeting with a cold nod, refused the coffee which he offered her and the easy-chair which he pushed forward to the fire. “I got your letter, Andrew,” she said, “in which you proposed to call upon me this afternoon. I am leaving town. I am on my way back to New York, as a matter of fact, and I shall have left the hotel by midday, so you see I have come to visit you instead.” “It is very kind,” he answered. She shrugged her shoulders and looked disparagingly around the plainly furnished man's sitting room. “Not much altered here,” she remarked. “It looks just as it did when I used to come to tea with you before we were married.” “The neighbourhood is a conservative one,” he replied. “Still, I must confess that I am glad I never gave the rooms up. I don't think that nature intended me to dwell in palaces.”

E. Phillips Oppenheim
E. Phillips Oppenheim was born in London, England on October 22nd, 1866. He left school at the age of seventeen to help at his father's leather business. However, a U.S. company bought the business, and Oppenheim was able to pursue his writing career. Writing novels, short stories, magazine articles, translations, and plays, Oppenheim's works total over 150. Calling himself the "prince of storytellers," he is considered one of the originators of the thriller genre. He wrote some of his novels using the pseudonym "Anthony Partridge." Oppenheim died in 1946. "Lady Anselman stood in the centre of the lounge at the Ritz Hotel and with a delicately-poised forefinger counted her guests. There was the great French actress who had every charm but youth, chatting vivaciously with a tall, pale-faced man whose French seemed to be as perfect as his attitude was correct. The popular wife of a great actor was discussing her husband's latest play with a Cabinet Minister who had the air of a school-boy present at an illicit feast. A very beautiful young woman, tall and fair, with grey-blue eyes and a wealth of golden, almost yellow hair, was talking to a famous musician. A little further in the background, a young man in the uniform of a naval lieutenant was exchanging what seemed to be rather impressive chaff with a petite but exceedingly good-looking girl. Lady Anselman counted them twice, glanced at the clock and frowned." (from

Edward Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946) , self-styled "Prince of story tellers", best-selling popular English novelist, and a pioneer in the thriller genre wrote The Great Impersonation Though he published some of his earlier books under the pseudonym 'Anthony Partridge', Oppenheim soon became a well-known writer of short stories and many novels, some of which he also skilfully illustrated. There are parables of everyday life to be found in some; international espionage and intrigue in others. Well-dressed hedonists clash with Puritans in lush settings while libertine Playboys and world weary businessman lead lives of romance and adventure in the underworld. His heroes are sophisticated gastronomes, his spies always up for a challenge, and the noblemen always dashing in the Rogue tradition. Edward Phillips Oppenheim was born on 22 October 1866, in London, England. His father Edward John Oppenheim was a leather merchant, his mother Henrietta Susannah Temperley Budd. `Oppy' as he was called when young attended the Wyggeston grammar school in Leicester. When he was sixteen years old he left school to assist his father in his leather business, which he stayed in for more than twenty years. When his father died, Oppenheim began to extricate himself from the business to concentrate on his writing. His home was The Cedars, Main Street in Evington from 1897 to 1905. His first novel was about England and Canada
