Blackbeard: Buccaneer by Ralph Delahaye Paine
May 15th, 2008 Author: Paine, Ralph Delahaye, 1871-1925 Excerpts gait. He was stout-bodied and the heat of the day oppressed him. Mopping his face with a lace handkerchief or fanning himself with his hat, he halted now and then in a shady spot. Very mindful of his rank and dignity was Mr. Peter Arbuthnot Forbes, sometime London barrister, at present Secretary to the Council of the Province. He differed from some of his neighbors in that he abominated pirates and would have given them short shift. A trifle near-sighted, he was quite close to the tavern before he espied his own nephew and ward, Jack Cockrell, in this shameful company of roisterers. The august uncle blinked, opened his mouth, and turned as red as a lobster. Indignation choked his speech. For his part, Jack stood dumfounded and quaking, the picture of a coward with a guilty conscience. He would have tried to steal from sight but it was too late. Captain Stede Bonnet enjoyed the tableau and several of his wicked sailors were mimicking the pompous strut of Mr. Peter Arbuthnot Forbes. Poor Jack mu

edit Pirate treasure
In reality, pirates burying treasure was rare: the only pirate known to have buried treasure was William Kidd who is believed to have buried at least some of his wealth on Long Island before sailing into New York . Kidd had originally been commissioned as a privateer for England , but his behavior had strayed into outright piracy, and he hoped that his treasure could serve as a bargaining chip in negotiations to avoid punishment. His bid was unsuccessful, however, and Kidd was hanged as a pirate. In English fiction there are three well known stories that helped popularize the myth of buried pirate treasure The Gold-Bug " by Edgar Allan Poe Wolfert Webber " by Washington Irving and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson . They differ widely in plot and literary treatment but are blood kin from the common ancestor of the William Kidd legend. Stevenson's Treasure Island was directly influenced by Irving's "Wolfert Webber", Stevenson saying in his preface "It is my debt to Washington Irving that exercises my conscience, and justly so, for I believe plagiarism was rarely carried farther... the whole inner spirit and a good deal of the material detail of my first chapters... were the property of Washington Irving."

First published as a book in 1883, it was originally serialized in the children's magazine Young Folks between 1881-82 under the title Treasure Island; or, the mutiny of the Hispaniola and the pseudonym Captain George North Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story , it is an adventure tale known for its atmosphere, character and action, and also a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality—as seen in Long John Silver —unusual for children's literature then and now. It is one of the most frequently dramatised of all novels. The influence of
