Palgrave, Francis Turner
(b. Sept. 28, 1824, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, Eng.d. Oct. 24, 1897, London), English critic and poet, editor of the influential anthology The Golden Treasury Educated at Charterhouse and at Balliol College, Oxford, Palgrave spent many years in the education department of the civil service and from 1885 to 1895 was professor of poetry at the University of Oxford. He was a friend of many notables of the time, including the statesman William Gladstone (to whom in 1846 he was assistant private secretary) and the poets Robert Browning, Alfred Tennyson, and Matthew Arnold. Of his original verse, Visions of England (1880-81) is the best known. His greatest service to poetry, however, was his compilation of The Golden Treasury of English Songs and Lyrics (1861), a comprehensive, well-chosen anthology, carefully arranged in its sequence. Palgrave's choice of poems was made in consultation with Tennyson. The Anthology had great influence on the poetic taste of several generations and was of particular value in popularizing Wordsworth. The original selections were modified in later editions. SUMMARY Palgrave's Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language is probably the most famous poetry anthology ever compiled. Originally published in 1861, it quickly established itself as the most popular selection of English poems. Today it stands as a testament to the richness of our finest native poetic writing from Spenser, Shakespeare, and Wordsworth, to Tennyson, Yeats, Eliot, and Betjeman.
This edition includes a sixth book, prepared by John Press, which covers the post-war years, showing that the lyrical tradition remains strong. Over ninety poets are included, from Dylan Thomas, George Mackay Brown, Ted Hughes, and Philip Larkin to Carol Ann Duffy, Elizabeth Garrett and Simon Armitage.

Beschreibung von buecher.de Francis Turner Palgrave's 'The Golden Treasury' is one of the best known anthology of English Poetry ever published. Its aim back in 1861 was to teach 'those indifferent to the Poets to love them, and those who love them to love them more'. No anthology has enjoyed a longer life or wider influence. Over the years, 'The Golden Treasury' has been updated by a series of editors who have responded to the changing tastes of the reading public. This facsimile reproduction of the 1861 edition makes Palgrave's original selection available once again for today's readers. Lovers of 'The Golden Treasury' should welcome the reissue of what is now accepted as a landmark in publishing history.

From Francis Palgrave's journal:
November 1, 1888.-A message from Hallam [Tennyson] telling me his father was better and would like to see me brings me to Aldworth. A.T. received me with all his wonted kindness, and presently his voice grew firm and strong, his conversation was full of life as ever. He emphatically repeated to me his constant estimate of Wordsworth as the greatest of our poets in this century. He gave me to read a very lovely and skilful poem on Gifford as Ulysses . . . Excerpted in G. Palgrave, Francis Turner Palgrave , p. 217.
