Kamilaroi
ETHNONYMS: Camileroi, Euahlayi, Gunilroy The Kamilaroi were an Aboriginal group located in New South Wales, Australia, along the Barwon, Bundarra, Balonne, and upper Hunter rivers and in the Liverpool plains. They are now nearly extinct and only a small number remain. The Kamilaroi language, which is no longer spoken, is classified in the Pama-Nyungan Family of Australian languages. The Kamilaroi were nomadic hunters and gatherers with a band-level social organization. Important vegetable foods were yams and other roots, as well as a sterculia grain, which was made into a bread. Insect larvae, frogs, and eggs of several different animals were also gathered. Various birds, kangaroos, emus, iguanas, opossums, echidnas, and bandicoots were among the important animals hunted. Dingo pups were regarded as a delicacy. Fish were also consumed, as were crayfish, mussels, and shrimp. Men typically hunted, cleaned, and prepared the game for cooking. Women did the actual cooking, in addition to fishing and gathering. Individual Kamilaroi did not eat animals that were their totems, although the Euahlayi, a related group, did not observe this restriction. Rites were held to encourage the propagation of totems. There were initiation ceremonies for both sexes, with circumcision for boys. Shamans (

Australian Aboriginal Dreaming Stories
(Myths and Legends)
A Chronological Bibliography of Published Works 1789-1993
Michael Organ, 28 December 2005
The following is a chronological listing of published works which have traditionally been labelled by Europeans and non-Aboriginal Australians using a variety of terms such as myths or mythology legends fairy tales superstitions fables traditions childrens stories dreamtime stories narratives or even ghost stories . Preference is given by the author to the use of the term dreaming stories in any references to such original Australian Aboriginal narratives. For a discussion of the various definitions and classifications of such material by Australian anthropologists and ethnologists refer Hiatt (1975). Interpretation of various Aboriginal narratives by local and overseas researchers and academics over the year has not been addressed in detail within this bibliography. Such studies cover a vast field, however some items have been included. The emphasis within this listing has remained on publications which reproduce individual or collections of Aboriginal dreaming stories, whether in part or whole. For example, in Tench (1789) and Collins (1798) mere portions or retellings of such stories are to be found. The following listing is by no means definitive, concentrating as it does on published collections. However an attempt has been made to include the major published reference works, along with a selection of journal articles. All the principal bibliographies of Aboriginal Australia have been consulted. In recent years a large collection of fiction, based upon Aboriginal dreaming stories, has appeared, e.g. Patricia Wrightson's
