Ohio State University Press has reissued it in its original form accompanied by a short but beautifully written introduction by Roger Lane, the American social historian of crime and murder. Lane's introduction chronicles Pearson's professional and literary career and provides a bit of his literary biography : Pearson came to New York in 1924, became editor of publications for the New York Public Library, and eventually wrote full time contributing frequently to Vanity Fair and The New Yorker.

"Theodore Roosevelt"
Another utterance of Secretary
of State John Hay is interesting. He wrote to a friend:
"Teddy has been here: have you heard of it? It was more fun than a
goat. He came down with a somber resolution thrown on his
strenuous brow to let McKinley and Hanna know once for all that he would not be Vice-President, and found to his stupefaction that nobody in Washington, except Platt, had ever dreamed of such a thing." [Footnote: Thayer, p. 148.] Mr. Hay was one of the wisest of our statesmen; one of the most polished and agreeable men in public life. Yet this letter shows how the older men often mistook Roosevelt. For, in less than a year after Mr. Hay had gently poked fun at "Teddy" for thinking that he might be made Vice-President, and said that there was not the slightest danger of such a thing happening, Roosevelt had been elected to that office. His enjoyment of his work, his bubbling merriment, his lack of the old-fashioned, pompous manners which

Beginnings
The Transcript was founded in 1830 by Henry Dutton and James Wentworth of the firm of Dutton and Wentworth, who were, at that time, the official state printers of Massachusetts. and Lynde Walter who was also the first editor of the Transcript
In 1830 The Boston Evening Bulletin , which had been a penny paper, ceased publication. Lynde Walter decided to use the opening provided to start a new evening penny paper in Boston. Walter approached Dutton and Wentworth with the proposal that he would edit the paper and that they would do the printing and circulation.
Dutton and Wentworth agreed to this as long as Walter would pay the expenses of the initial editions of the newspaper.

"Philobiblos," The Old Librarian's Almanack: A very rare pamphlet first published in New Haven Connecticut in 1773and now reprinted for the first time , The Librarian's Series/The Elm Tree Press, Woodstock VT, 1909. Edmund Lester Pearson (1880- 1937) was a professional librarian. He got an AB degree from Harvard College in 1902, and a B.L.S. (Bachelor of Library Science?) degree from the New York State Library School at Albany in 1904. From 1904 to 1909, he held posts at the Washington DC Public Library, the Library of Congress, the War Department, and a private library in Asheville NC. In 1909, he returned to Newburyport MA to devote full time to writing. Pearson's "Old Librarian" views library patrons as insufferable nuisances distracting librarians from their true vocation (personal reading), when not an actual danger to precious books they itch to steal or damage. Patrons certainly had no useful suggestions to make on what books to acquire. No librarian in 1909 would admit to sharing the "Old Librarian"s attitudes, but some of the satire could apply to bureaucracies in general.
