    Samuel Pepys (1633 - 1703)
Samuel Pepys, by John Hayls   Pepys is famous for his diaries, which cover the years 1659 - 1669, but also enjoyed a successful career as a naval administrator and member of parliament. Samuel Pepys was born on 23 February 1633 near Fleet Street in London, the son of a tailor. He was educated at St Paul's School in London and Cambridge University. After graduating, Pepys was employed as secretary to Edward Montagu, a distant relative who was a councillor of state during the Cromwellian protectorate and later served Charles II. In 1655, Pepys married 15-year-old Elizabeth Marchant de Saint-Michel, daughter of a Huguenot exile. In 1658, he underwent a dangerous operation for the removal of a bladder stone. Every year on the anniversary of the operation, he celebrated his recovery. Pepys began his diary on 1 January 1660. It is written in a form of shorthand, with names in longhand. It ranges from private remarks, including revelations of infidelity - to detailed observations of events in 17th century England - such as the plague of 1665, the Great Fire of London and Charles II's coronation - and some of the key figures of the era, including Sir Christopher Wren and Sir Isaac Newton. Fear of losing his eyesight prompted Pepys to stop writing the diary in 1669. He never actually went blind.

SUMMARY Richard Le Gallienne's elegant abridgment of the "Diary" captures the essential writings of Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), a remarkable man who witnessed the coronation of Charles II, the Great Plague of 1665, and the Great Fire of 1666. Originally scribbled in a cryptic shorthand, Pepys's quotidian journal of life in Restoration London provides an astonishingly frank and diverting account of political intrigues; naval, church, and cultural affairs; and the sexual escapades and domestic strife of a man with a voracious, childlike appetite for living. "As a human document the "Diary" is literally unique," notes Le Gallienne. "It will have a still greater value for its historical importance."

to Samuel Pepys , 1 page folio with address-leaf, Cockpitt [Whitehall], 8 June 1664. Addressed 'For the honoured / S Pepys Esqr. these / att the Navy Office . in Seething Lane.'
With Pepys's autograph endorsement: 'June. 8. 1664. / Duke of Albemarle to mee / abt. the souldrs. to bee / dispached in Sr. W. Rider's ship / to Tanger. / SP.' Tangier had been acquired from Portugal in 1661 as part of Charles II's marriage treaty with Catherine of Braganza. it was hoped, vainly as it turned out, that it would serve as an effective base against the depredations of Barbary corsairs. The maintenance and supply of the Tangier garrison proved extremely expensive, and England finally evacuated it in 1684. Albemarle and Pepys were members of the Privy Council Committee for Tangier, as was Sir William Rider, mentioned in the letter. On 9 June 1664 Pepys notes in his diary that he went to see Albemarle in person about the business of this letter: 'at night by coach to attend the Duke of Albemarle about the Tangier ship.' Pepys's opinion of Albemarle appears somewhat ambivalent: in 1665 he described him as 'a quiet, heavy man, that will help business when he can and hinder nothing.'
The Baltic merchant Sir William Rider had very much pleased Pepys earlier in 1664 by confiding that he had been keeping 'a journall of his life for almost these 40 years, even to this day.' It was to Rider's imposing Elizabethan country house at Bethnal Green that Pepys was to send his own diary and other valuables during the Great Fire two years later. The

Diarist, naval administrator, and MP. He is best known for his diary, kept from 1660 until 1669, which provides a remarkable documentary Of Charles II's London. It was written in Thomas Shelton's system of shorthand, in six volumes, and was first deciphered in 1819. Samuel Pepys was born on 23rd February 1633 over his father's tailor's shop in Salisbury Court between Fleet Street and The Thames. He moved to Brampton from London because of his health and fears of The Plague (from which several of his brothers died.) The Pepys family originated from Cottenham although Samuel was born in London, the son of a tailor. One of his relations, Paulina Pepys, was married to Sir Sydney Montagu, which explains the connection between Samuel and Sir Sydney's son. Pepys lived at Brampton for part of his boyhood and attended the Huntingdon Free School. He became Montagu's secretary in in 1660, after serving him in more minor capacities. He lived for a time in his house in Brampton which he inherited from his uncle and which still stands.
