1. Encyclopćdia Britannica's Guide To Women's History
For millennia, women have left their mark on the world, at times changing the course of history and at other times influencing small but significant spheres of life.
http://www.britannica.com/women/articles/Perkins_Lucy_Fitch.html
Some, though they lived centuries ago, are still alive in popular culture; music and poetry by the Roman Catholic abbess Hildegard can be heard in contemporary recordings, and Murasaki Shikibu 's The Tale of Genji is one of the greatest works of Japanese literature. Many women overcame the oppression of their surroundings through determination and ingenuity: Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and risked her life helping others to freedom. Other women grew up in privileged surroundings; the philosopher and mathematician Hypatia and the historian Ban Zhao were born to families that permitted the education of girls in an era when females were rarely even taught to read. Not all of these women changed the world for the good. Filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl produced propaganda films that glorified Adolf Hitler's brutal Third Reich. Many suffered through the deeds of Jiang Qing , who fought bitterly to advance her own political powers during China's Cultural Revolution. Some were warriors such as Boudicca , who led a bloody rebellion against the Romans. Others advocated peace:

Lucy Fitch Perkins (1865-1937) , American author, educator and illustrator, wrote the popular Twins series of books including The Dutch Twins The Irish Twins The Eskimo Twins The Mexican Twins (1916), and The Belgian Twins Important sources of historical and cultural references, the Twins books were widely read by children and young adults in schools and homes all over North America and translated to numerous languages. With illustrations by Perkins, they describe life in other countries and deal with subjects as wide-ranging as familial relationships and war, religion and coming-of-age in relation to the given country with a touch of humor and sometimes dramatic surprise. Some of the books also retell various regional legends and folk tales. Perkins tapped into a vast educational resource for the promotion of and understanding of ourselves and each other. Lucy Fitch Perkins was born on 12 July 1865 in Maples, Indiana, the daughter of factory owner Appleton Howe Fitch and Elizabeth Bennett. Her Puritan upbringing included a strong value on education. Perkins started her career as an artist; first studying in Boston at the Fine Arts School, she then obtained a position as book illustrator with the Louis Prang Educational Company. She then was asked to teach art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

The Twins Homepage
During the early part of the twentieth century, a woman named Lucy Fitch Perkins (1865-1937) wrote a series of children's books known as "The Twins Books", published by the Riverside Press of Cambridge, MA. As this title suggests, each of the 26 books in the series featured a set of twins. Almost all of the sets were made up of one boy and one girl, the only exception being The Spanish Twins , which starred two boys. Each book took place in a different country or time in America's past. The main purpose of these enjoyable stories seemed to be to make life in foreign cultures and past times easily accessable to "modern" American children. Many of the cultural books very slyly describe the repression of women in other lands, most prominantly Asiatic ones. However, this is not immediatly apparent to the child reader of the novels, in fact I myself only noticed it in the past few years. (NB: I am almost 19) These books, once very common, are now hard to find. I have been a collector of the series since the fourth grade and now as a college freshman am almost done. I think that these stories have lost none of their appeal over the years, and I am ever hopeful that someday soon they will be re-released. Books should never be forgotten.
Here is a list of the books I own and a brief plot summary of each. I hope this is helpful to other fans and interesting too.
