Ida Pfeiffer
Ida Pfeiffer was born in Vienna, Austria, as Ida Reyer. She had five or six brothers and was treated as one of the boys by her father. As a young girl, she wore boys' clothes and received the same education as her brothers. She was also encouraged to participate in strenuous outdoor activities to help develop physical strength and independence. Her father died when Ida was nine years old at which point her mother encouraged her to take up activities and clothing more suitable for a young lady of her time. She reluctantly started wearing dresses and took piano lessons. At age seventeen, she fell in love with her tutor and he with her. They wanted to marry, but Ida's mother forbade it. She wanted a better match for her daughter. Finally, in 1820, when Ida was 22 years old, she agreed to marry Pfeiffer, a widower much older than herself. Pfeiffer was a lawyer and held an important position in the Austrian government. Later, the Pfeiffers had two sons together. Some time after their marriage, her husband lost his government position and the family found itself poor. Ida started giving music and drawing lessons to earn money but that amount didn't meet their needs and she asked her brothers to help finance her sons' schooling. After her mother died in 1831 and left her a small inheritance, there was just enough money for living expenses and for the boys' education. In 1835, the Pfeiffers separated. By 1842 both sons had established their own homes and Ida was free of family obligations. She decided to travel.

Pfeiffer, Ida (1797-1858)
Brief Biography:
Ida Pfeiffer was born Ida Reyer in Vienna, Austria in 1797. She had five brothers and was raised like the boys by her father. When she was twenty-two years old, she married a high-ranking official in Vienna; they had two sons. After her husband lost his job, she was forced to give piano and drawing lessons to help support the family. Her brothers helped pay for their son's education. In 1835, she separated from her husband, and by 1842 felt herself free to pursue travels she had dreamed about since a youth. Her first trip was to the Holy Land, and sales from the resulting travel diaries encouraged her to take other trips. She traveled to Iceland, South American, Africa, and Asia, recording her experiences for publication.
Brief Itinerary:
Travelling by steamer, Ida left Vienna in March, 1842 for Constantinople. She would be there for about three weeks, and then venture on to Jerusalem and Sinai. She was in the Holy Land for several months, then went on to Cairo. She learned to ride a camel in order to go into the desert to see the Sphinx, the Great Pyramid at Giza, and the Valley of the Queens where the tomb of Queen Hatshepsut is located. She went to the Isthmus of Suez and began her journey home through Naples, Italy. She was gone for a little over ten months on this trip.
Brief History of the Text:
Ida kept a travel journal during her trip through the Holy Land, Egypt, and Italy. She kept this journal faithfully at the end of each travel day. Written in pencil, the diary started as a personal treatise for herself and her family. First published as

The daughter of a wealthy merchant named Reyer, she was born at Vienna . As a child, she preferred boys' clothing and liked sports and exercise, which was encouraged by her father. Following his death when she was nine, her mother - disapproving this unconventional upbringing - persuaded Ida to wear girls' clothing and to take up piano lessons. After Napoleon I , emperor of the French, conquered Vienna in 1809, some of the French troops were quartered in Reyer's home to Ida's dislike. During the grand review held in Schönbrunn Palace , she protested against foreign occupation by turning her back as Napoleon rode past.
