Biography
Coming on like prog rock giants Hawkwind but in the heavier, post- Sunn 0))) world, the Nottingham, U.K., act Pilgrim Fathers rightfully declare their sound "music for astronauts to die to." Featuring vocalist Shelf, guitarist Feg, bassist Stephen Averill, drummer Kev Richardson, and Dan Gardner on keyboards and "cosmic sounds," the band toured the U.K. both solo and with before signing with the adventurous label Undergroove . In early 2008, BBC DJ Daniel P. Carter gave the band its big break when he world premiered the track "Gold, GOLD!" on the Radio 1 Rock Show . They dropped their debut album, Short Circular Walks in the Hope Valley , in April and followed it with more touring, including gigs opening for Monster Magnet and Orange Goblin . Following in the Hawkwind tradition of numerous side projects, Feg and Shelf are also involved in the Pilgrim Fathers offshoot Pilgrim Sons. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

Maritime Topics On Stamps : The Pilgrim-Fathers’ Voyage with the 'Mayflower'
In 1620 a group of religiously separatists chartered a ship called 'Mayflower'. Around that time, there were supposedly four different ships with this same name, so we do not know exactly which one it was that sailed to America. It is said that the 'Mayflower' fought against the Spanish Armada in 1588. From this we may assume that she had similar measurements and appearance of a galleon. A three-masted ship with a high platform aft, of approx. 180 tons, length of 90', beam 24', depth 13', armed with 10 cannons (in 1588), crew of 40. It is not known whether there were three square sails set on foremast and main mast (as shown on the Mali stamp) or just two. The 'Mayflower' was employed bringing wine from the Mediterranean to England and outward bound she carried furs and bales of cloth to France.
The Pilgrim Fathers were a small group of English Puritans who had separated from the Anglican Church. After fleeing to the Netherlands, in 1607/08, seeking refuge from persecution in England, they decided to pursue greater religious freedom in Colonial America.
They made a contract with English merchants who chartered two ships for the pilgrims and financed the journey. In return, the emigrants were to send back cargoes of fish, furs and lumber. On July 22, 1620, the emigrants boarded the 60 ton ship 'Speedwell' (left stamp) in the Dutch port Delftshaven and sailed to Southampton. There they changed over to the larger 'Mayflower', and both ships were intended to sail to America together. Both ships left port on August 5, 1620. Shortly after departure the 'Speedwell' was found to be leaking and both ships returned to Dartmouth (right stamp).

hen the Pilgrims fled from England to Holland to evade persecution they were but one of many groups seeking refuge in Leiden. Holland was tolerant, after feeling the Spanish terror and converting to a sober-minded Protestantism. Also, the economic advantages of this influx of artisans and craftsmen was recognized; the boom in the Leiden cloth industry owed a lot to the arrival of French and Flemish weavers.
The Pilgrims led a quiet life in Leiden between 1609 and 1620. They held their services in a chapel of the university. William Bradford was a member of the wool guild and reverend John Robinson lived in the spot where later the Jean Pesijn almshouses were built. Robinson stayed in Leiden, died and was buried in the Peter's Church in 1625. In the Pieterskerkchoorsteeg one can still find the house where William Brewster's Pilgrim Press produced dissident pamphlets which were smuggled to England. But peace and quiet wasn't enough for the Pilgrims. The tolerance they enjoyed also became a source of irritation. Too many different creeds and lifestyles influenced their offspring and after 12 years they decided to leave for the New World to found a society completely based on their convictions.
The Leiden American Pilgrim Museum in the Beschuitsteeg treats the Leiden stay of the Pilgrims.

Delfshaven and Records of the
Pilgrim Fathers
As presented in the Holland Society Yearbook 1898:
Through the courtesy of the Secretary of State, at Washington, President Vrooman (of the Holland Society), received an advance sheet of a consular report which will be of interest to our members, and is therefore herewith published. Consul Listoe sends from Rotterdam, under date of February 12, 1898, a description of the town whence the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Holland to America. Consular reports, it should be noted, are usually limited to commercial and industrial subjects; but, in view of the general interest of this subject (the consul says he has received several requests from America for copies of the church records herein given), an exception is made in this case.
The report is as follows:
One of the points within this consular district possessing most interest for citizens of the United States is undoubtedly the ancient town of Delfshaven, situated on the river Maas (Meuse), a couple of miles below Rotterdam, and, in fact, now a part of this city. The town derives its name (Haven: harbor) from the fact that it formerly was the seaport for the city of Delft, once an important city, where William the Silent - the liberator of the Netherlands - and most of his descendants lie buried, and in later years famous for its manufacture of the decorated porcelain known as delftware. Delft is located eight miles inland from its "haven", on the river Schie, which empties into the Maas.
