PLATO
427-347 BC
Greek philosopher who was most likely born in Athens to an aristocratic family, though little is known of his early life. He was a large, athletic, intelligent man, who could have succeeded in any number of calling. He became a student Socrates, and devoted himself chiefly to philosophy. He traveled widely, then sometime before 368 B.C. he founded on land which had belonged to Academos, a school of learning which being situated in the grove of Academos was called the Academy. He presided over his Academy in Athens, an institution devoted to research and instruction in philosophy and the sciences until his death. After his death the Academy continued to flourished for over 900 years until in 529 AD when it was closed down by Emperor Justinian who claimed it was a pagan establishment. Extract from Plato's Timaeus and Critias This extract from the work of Plato (circa 427 - 347 BC) is the first appearance in classical literature of the Atlantis myth. It is supposed to be part of a story told by Plato's great grandfather (Critias), who heard it from his great-grandfather (Dropides), who heard it from an Athenian traveller (Solon). The narrator is an Egyptian priest talking to Solon. It is supposed to describe a historical war between the ancient Athenians and the legendary Atlantis. 'Our records show how your city checked a great power which arrogantly advanced from its base in the Atlantic Ocean to attack the cities of Europe and Asia. For in those days the Atlantic was navigable. At a later time there were earthquakes and floods of extraordinary violence, and in a single dreadful day and night all your fighting men were swallowed up by the earth, and the island of Atlantis was similarly swallowed up by the sea and vanished; this is why the sea in that area is to this day impassable to navigation, which is hindered by mud just below the surface, the remains of the sunken island' Translation by Sir Desmond Lee, first published 1965, Penguin Classics. Although Plato describes Atlantis as an island in the Atlantic Ocean, and some Canarian writers have associated Atlantis with the Canaries, it is now generally believed that the Atlantis myth is a memory of Minoan Crete, a civilisation which was overwhelmed by the volcanic explosion of the Mediterranean island of Santorini in the fifteenth century BC.

The inheritance criticism questions what it means to say that the form of something inheres in a particular or that the particular is a copy of the form. If the form is not spatial, it cannot have a shape, so the particular cannot be the same shape as the form.
Another criticism of forms relates to the origin of concepts without the benefit of sense-perception. For example, to think of redness-in-general is to think of the form of redness. But how can one have the concept of a form existing in a special realm of the universe, separate from space and time, since such a concept cannot come from sense-perception. Although one can see an apple and its redness, those things merely participate in, or are copies of, the forms. Thus to conceive of a particular apple and its redness is not to conceive of applehood or redness-in-general.
Platonic epistemology, however, addresses such criticism by saying that knowledge is innate and that souls are born with the concepts of the forms. They just have to be reminded of those concepts from back before birth, when they were in close contact with the forms in the Platonic heaven. Plato believed that each soul existed before birth with "The Form of the Good" and a perfect knowledge of everything. Thus, when something is "learned" it is actually just "recalled."

The Italian Almanac
Italian News - October 13 Top scholars have gathered in Rome this week to discuss the exciting and controversial idea that Sardinia is the lost island of Atlantis. The theory, developed in a book by the Italian journalist Sergio Frau, has drawn international acclaim but also fuelled heated criticism. Despite selling 30,000 copies in Italy, a detailed 20-point appeal by 250 academics has dismissed the book, claiming it sensationalizes Sardinian history. But the theory received a major boost last year, when the United Nations cultural heritage body UNESCO organized a symposium on the issue in Paris, suggesting the idea was worth serious consideration. Academics, archaeologists, geologists and historians from across Italy are now meeting in Rome's Accademia dei Lincei to look at the theory in closer depth and discuss possible paths of future research. The meeting has also been timed to coincide with the opening of an exhibition on Frau's ideas, originally shown in Paris last year. "Atlantika" uses Frau's book, "The Pillars of Hercules", as a springboard for exploring theories and ideas on the legendary island and its whereabouts. Neither the location nor the existence of Atlantis have ever been confirmed. The first documented mention of the island dates back to ancient Greek philosopher Plato - circa 427-347 BC - who said it was destroyed by a natural disaster, possibly a tsunami. Traditional theories have placed it somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean because Plato said it was beyond the Pillars of Hercules which, according to another ancient writer, Erathosthenes, were at the Strait of Gibraltar.
