The South's most renowned literary artist of the 19th century spent most of his productive years as a struggling journalist in large northern cities. Born on 19 January 1809, in Boston, Mass., Poe was the second child of David and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, both active theatrical performers on the East Coast of the United States. His father mysteriously disappeared in 1810, and after his mother's subsequent death, in December 1811, he became the foster son of John Allan, a prominent Richmond, Va., tobacco merchant who gave Poe many childhood advantages. In 1826 he attended the University of Virginia, leaving after only a few months to join the United States Army. His first volume of poems, entitled Tamerlane and Other Poems , was privately published in 1827; a second volume, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems , appeared in 1829 shortly after he was honorably discharged from the army. Aided by his foster father, he entered West Point in 1830 as a cadet but was soon discharged for failing to heed regulations. Beginning in 1829, influential writers and journalists like John Neal and John P. Kennedy began to support his efforts to attain literary prominence. Poems

The literary talent of Edgar Allan Poe is beyond dispute, but his activity in the scientific area (condensed in Eureka) has been sadly neglected or ignored. Only recently have some researchers undertaken the labor of re-evaluating it. This recent re-evaluation is long overdue, especially, those propositions related to Cosmology. This paper purposes extensions of those propositions, as well as additional commentary, relating, in particular, to Chemistry. Paul Soares Rummet, Virveln och Den dda flickan

    The Cask of Amontillado
    Edgar Allan Poe
THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. AT LENGTH I would be avenged; this was a point definitively settled but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved precluded the idea of risk. I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong. It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile NOW was at the thought of his immolation. He had a weak point this Fortunato although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine. Few Italians have the true virtuoso spirit. For the most part their enthusiasm is adopted to suit the time and opportunity to practise imposture upon the British and Austrian MILLIONAIRES. In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymen , was a quack, but in the matter of old wines he was sincere. In this respect I did not differ from him materially; I was skilful in the Italian vintages myself, and bought largely whenever I could.

    Poe, Edgar Allan
Edgar Allan Poe is known for his macabre tenor, opposition of the didactic, and biting critical voice. Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809 to David Poe Jr., a second generation Irishman, and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, English born but raised in America. Both were actors and members of the stock company at the Boston Theatre. Poe?¢s father abandoned his family not long after Poe was born and Elizabeth Poe died a couple of years following. He then became a ward of Mr. and Mrs. John Allan in Richmond, Virginia. Poe enrolled at the University of Virginia in 1826 where he acquired gambling debts which John Allan refused to pay and Poe was forced to withdraw from the university. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1827. During this same year, he published his first book of poems entitled Tamerlane and Other Poems (included ?¢Dream with a Dream?¢??) under the alias phrase ?¢By a Bostonian.?¢?? His enlistment took him to Castle Island where a grizzly tale of revenge in which a soldier was sealed in the fort?¢s dungeon vault, is said to have inspired the ?¢The Cask of Amontillado,?¢?? published later in 1846.
