43. Robert Bloch On Poe And Lovecraft
Comparison of the two preeminent American authors of supernatural horror and fantasy.
http://alangullette.com/lit/hpl/bloch.htm
Poe
Lovecraft by
Robert Bloch
[Reprinted from Ambrosia No. 2 (Aug. 1973)]
Comparisons between Edgar Allan Poe and Howard Phillips Lovecraft are, I suppose, inevitable; seemingly, in recent years [writing in 1973] they are also interminable.
I shall not, therefore, repeat the usual recital of similarities to be found within their work there will be no mention of black cats, revenants , or Antarctic settings per se
But at the same time I have no intention of making a calculated bid for attention by deliberately asserting, as some have also declared, that no real resemblance exists aside from superficial employment of stock characters and themes common to virtually all stories in the genre
To me, this is an untenable statement: Lovecraft, like every writer of fantasy and horror fiction subsequent to Poe, was necessarily influenced by the work of his predecessor and to certain extent his work needs must be derivative in some slight sense. Actually, Lovecraft's homage to Poe in his essay Supernatural Horror In Literature , indicates a degree of appreciation and admiration which leaves no doubt as to the profound impression made upon him by the earlier master.

The Story: Edgar Allan Poe [1809-1849] had a fascination with cryptography. Besides numerous references to secret writings in some of his poems and stories such as The Gold-Bug , he conducted his own "cryptographic challenge" that was published in Alexander's Weekly Messenger beginning in December, 1839. For this series of articles Poe challenged his readers to submit their cryptographs to him, asserting that he would solve them all. For the next six months Poe published solutions to the ciphers submitted by his readers, and shared his views on the nature of cryptography. Poe's association with the Messenger ended in May, 1840, but he took up the subject approximately a year later in an article he wrote for

Most people recognize Poe by his famous poem, "The Raven" . Others may have read one of his more popular dark and creepy tales like, "The Fall of the House of Usher" or "The Tell-tale Heart" . Poe wrote quite a few gothic stories about murder revenge torture the plague ... being buried alive , and insanity . Many modern books and movies have "borrowed" ideas from Poe. Some of Poe's stories were not well accepted in his day because people were just not ready for them- they were too scary.
Many people don't know that Edgar Allan Poe also wrote stories about adventure on the high seas buried pirate treasure , and a famous balloon ride . Poe invented the detective story with tales like "Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Purloined Letter" . Sherlock Holmes and other fictional detectives would later be based on the characters that Poe created. Poe wrote love stories and even a few strange little comedies . He attempted to explain the composition of the universe in a way that sounds a little like quantum physics. Explore this site and you'll see why I think Edgar Allan Poe deserves to be recognized as one of the most original, imaginative, and ingenious authors of our society.

Edgar Allan Poe
Born: January 19, 1809, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Died: October 7, 1849, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
American poet, writer, editor and literary critic, one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and the inventor of the detective-fiction genre, best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre.
Edgar Allan Poe Biography
Edgar Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809, the second child of actor David Poe, Jr and actress Elizabeth Poe. His father abandoned their family in 1810 and his mother died in 1811. Then Edgar Poe was taken into the home of John Allan, a successful merchant in Richmond, Virginia. The Allans served as a foster family but never formally adopted edgar Poe, though they gave him the name Edgar Allan Poe. Unable to support himself, in 1827, Poe enlisted in the US Army as a private. He first served at Fort Independence in Boston Harbor for five dollars a month. That same year, he released his first book, a collection of poetry "Tamerlane and Other Poems". The book received virtually no attention. Poe was promoted to "artificer", an enlisted tradesman who prepared shells for artillery. After serving for two years and attaining the rank of Sergeant Major for Artillery, Poe sought to end his five-year enlistment early. He was discharged on April, 1829, and traveled to West Point and matriculated as a cadet on July, 1830. Poe decided to leave West Point on February, 1831.

The Essential Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe's Richmond
This article was written by Jean Nealon Poe Museum, Richmond In "To One in Paradise," Edgar Allan Poe describes his longing for: A green isle in the sea, love, A fountain and a shrine, All wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers, And all the flowers were mine. The garden of the Poe Museum in Richmond creates just such a spot where visitors (and perhaps the poet's spirit) can linger. Advertisement:
The Poe Shrine is an open brick shelter, constructed of materials salvaged from the Southern Literary Messenger building where Poe worked as an editor. A bust of the poet looks out on an island of green grass, a two-tiered fountain, and a stone planter overflowing with begonias. It is a typical autumn day in Central Virginia, warm with the sun filtering through a gauzy haze, but cool in the shade of the shrine. I sit on a weathered wrought iron bench and watch sunlight and water play in the fountain. Six-packs of pansies mark the spot where the gardener's fall planting was interrupted. A plant stand, which I at first thought contained garden implements and sprays, holds a delightful surprise: a coffee urn and cookie jar! And on its shelves, inviting me to browse, the

In early May he had journeyed to Washington armed with testimonials from his officers and a letter of introduction from John Allan to Major John Eaton, Secretary of War. Poe applied for appointment to the Military Academy. Then he went to Baltimore to find his relatives. Having discovered his Aunt Maria and her family, he boarded nearby from sometime in May until late December 1829. Indeed, he may have continued living near the Clemm family until his appointment to West Point came through in March 1830. At least he was nearby on 10 December, when he sold a slave belonging to Maria Clemm in the Baltimore slave market. During his residence near the Clemms he was not idle: in December his second volume of verse, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems
