This article was written by Scott D. Peterson The University of Virginia
In 1826, Edgar Allan Poe attended the University of Virginia to receive the liberal education promised to him by his foster father, John Allan. Almost 200 years later, I visited Charlottesville in search of background ambiance for a novel I was writing about Poe's stint as a college student. Although Poe had only turned 17 just three weeks before his arrival, John Allan's influence with the school's administrators cleared the way for his charge's early admission.
Lacking that sort of pull, I was forced to stand outside Poe's room on the West Range and settle for looking through the glass door. Even so, the August afternoon I spent among the stately brick buildings at the heart of the campus was more than enough to give me a sense of how Thomas Jefferson's "Academical Village" impacted Poe's writing and personality during his ten-month stay in Charlottesville. T he life of Edgar A. Poe was checkered by an alternating series of successes and failures, of breakdowns and recoveries, of hopes engendered and dashed despite which (or, perhaps, because of which) he produced brilliant literature that assured his enduring stature as America's finest writer of psychological horror and as one of her best poets. In addition, Poe is credited with defining the modern short story, creating the first literary detective (Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin), and writing some of the first science fiction. Edgar Allan Poe
    BY JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL
THE situation of American literature is anomalous. It has no centre, or, if it have, it is like that of the sphere of Hermes. It is, divided into many systems, each revolving round its several suns, and often presenting to the rest only the faint glimmer of a milk-and-water way. Our capital city, unlike London or Paris, is not a great central heart from which life and vigor radiate to the extremities, but resembles more an isolated umbilicus stuck down as near a’s may be to the centre of the land, and seeming rather to tell a legend of former usefulness than to serve any present need. Boston, New York, Philadelphia, each has its literature almost more distinct than those of the different dialects of Germany; and the Young Queen of the West has also one of her own, of which some articulate rumor barely has reached us dwellers by the Atlantic. Perhaps there is no task more difficult than the just criticism of contemporary literature. It is even more grateful to give praise where it is needed than where it is deserved, and friendship so often seduces the iron stylus of justice into a vague flourish, that she writes what seems rather like an epitaph than a criticism. Yet if praise be given as an alms, we could not drop so poisonous a one into any man’s hat. The critic’s ink may suffer equally from too large an infusion of nutgalls or of sugar. But it is easier to be generous than to be just, and we might readily put faith in that fabulous direction to the hiding place of truth, did we judge from the amount of water which we usually find mixed with it.

Edgar Allan Poe, critic, mystery and short story writer, but most importantly a poet, all these titles help to describe the multitalented genius that is Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe lived only 40 short years (1809-1849), yet his body of work is as rich a literary legacy as any published author. Poe was born into an acting family, both mother and father were actors, but their tragic death in 1812, left young Edgar to be raised by his Godfather John Allan, a wealthy merchant in Richmond Virginia. Poe was educated abroad and later at the University of Virginia. His relationship with his Godfather was not always an easy one; arguments over Edgar's gambling eventually led to a parting of ways and a tour of duty in the army for Poe due to financial necessity. There was a reconciliation with John Allan, only to have the relationship chill again once John Allan remarried. Tamerlane and other poems (1827) was Edgar Allen Poe's first published literary work, followed by two other works a few years later. These early works were not met with the critical acclaim that would later be bestowed upon him. He moved to Baltimore to live with his Aunt Clemm and her daughter Virginia. He secured a job as editor of the

Poe's father and mother, both professional actors, died before the poet was three and John and Frances Allan raised him as a foster child in Richmond, Virginia. John Allan, a prosperous tobacco exporter, sent Poe to the best boarding schools and later to the University of Virginia, where Poe excelled academically. After less than one year of school, however, he was forced to leave the University when Allan refused to pay his gambling debts. Poe returned briefly to Richmond, but his relationship with Allan deteriorated. In 1827, he moved to Boston and enlisted in the United States Army. His first collection of poems

... or so I used to think, but every time I teach a Poe tale I hear students talk about what a drug-addled drunken psychopath he was. And since none of that is true, ol' Edgar does wrong thing to do; some scholars have speculated that Poe would deliberately (or at least "subconsciously deliberately") get drunk at high-stress moments in his life precisely in order to cause a plan or project to fail, such as the time he showed up drunk at the house of a woman with whom he was on the verge of marriage, conveniently ending the engagement. Not that Poe didn't want to marry her so much as he was unable to marry her, if what many scholars say about Poe and women is true.
What do they say? Well, many trace his difficulties to his early abandonment by his parents, and his "pursuit" of various women was more a pursuit of the mother-imago (to get Jungian for a second) than of the woman herself, but when he came to the verge of marriage, well, not even Oedipus wanted to marry his mom. Thus it is that Poe ended up marrying his thirteen-year-old cousin, the aptly named Virginia (and this at a time when marrying one's cousin was a reasonably legitimate thing to do); she was already ill, thus conveniently rendering consummation of the marriage unlikely if not impossible. The Poe Society of Baltimore website has more on Poe's issues with drugs and alcohol
Is that enough of an intro? No, it's really just an attempt to dispel a couple of the more common myths; Poe's contribution to the Gothic tradition, and to its evolution away from an "exterior," sensationalized terror-trip into a more psychological experience, is too substantial and too significant to be fully engaged here.

    Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston. He was the son of itinerant actors who died before Poe was three years old. He then became the ward of a Virginia couple called the Allans, whose name he added to his own. He studied at the University of Virginia, but his love of drinking and gambling made his stay there short lived. He then enlisted in the Army and served soberly from 1827 to 1829. In 1830 Poe was accepted into West Point, but he ruined his chances there as well with more drinking. In 1836 he married his cousin, thirteen year old Virginia Clemm, and tried to support her by writing and editing. He was editor of the Richmond Southern Literary Messenger , as well as a few others, and published his own magazine for a while called The Stylus . He won many literary prized early in his career, but he made little money, and his alcoholism cost him many jobs in journalism. His wife died in 1847, and he then became engaged to a wealthy widow. In 1849, while traveling to meet the widow, he met some friends and went out drinking with them. He was later found unconscious in a Baltimore street and died a few days later. Edgar Allan Poe was a household name to American readers. His use of terror and the supernatural in his fiction made him very popular with them. His writing, however, used little of the American experience, but relied heavily on the Gothic techniques and German romanticism. While his short fiction was loved in the United States, his poetry was more successful overseas, especially in France. His critical essays have had a profound effect on literature as well, especially in the short story.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) One the greatest and unhappiest of American poets, a master of the horror tale, and the patron saint of the detective story. Edgar Allan Poe first gained critical acclaim in France and England. His reputation in America was relatively slight until the French-influenced writers like Ambroce Bierce, Robert W. Chambers, and representatives of the Lovecraft school created interest in his work. "The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends and where the other begins?" (from The Premature Burial Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to parents who were itinerant actors. His father David Poe Jr. died probably in 1810. Elizabeth Hopkins Poe died in 1811, leaving three children. Edgar was taken into the home of a Richmond merchant John Allan. The remaining children were cared for by others. Poe's brother William died young and sister Rosalie become later insane. At the age of five Poe could recite passages of English poetry. Later one of his teachers in Richmond said: "While the other boys wrote mere mechanical verses, Poe wrote genuine poetry; the boy was a born poet." Poe was brought up partly in England (1815-20), where he attended Manor School at Stoke Newington. Later it become the setting for his story 'William Wilson'. Never legally adopted, Poe took Allan's name for his middle name. Poe attended the University of Virginia (1826-27), but was expelled for not paying his gambling debts. This led to quarrel with Allan, who refused to pay the debts. Allan later disowned him. In 1826 Poe became engaged to Elmira Royster, but her parents broke off the engagement. During his stay at the university, Poe composed some tales, but little is known of his apprentice works. In 1827 Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier under assumed name, Edgar A. Perry. He was sent to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, which provided settings for 'The Gold Bug' (1843) and 'The Balloon Hoax' (1844).
