The Internet needs your attention

The good news is that the online world offers children experiences that are educational and rewarding. In addition, being able to use the Internet effectively may increase a child's school performance and future job potential. However, this new medium also can present unsafe situations. Just as you would not allow your child to wander alone into unknown territory, you also would not want him or her to interact on the Internet without parental guidance and supervision. To help you keep your child safe online, this brochure provides an overview of three areas of the Internet popular with children (email, the Web, and chat rooms). For each area, we:
  • List positive benefits, as well as possible risks, for your child
Provide a range of parenting tips that are most relevant to that area Explain what parental control tools can do
This brochure also includes a resource list for additional information.

Families Will Enjoy Many Hours of Fun and Adventure!
This 587-page yellow page directory covers hundreds of topics of interest to kids and their families. Websites offer information about animals, art, buried treasures, coin collecting and money, computers, food, foreign countries, American history, insects, interesting facts, the Internet, music, scouting, ships and shipwrecks, space missions, sports history, toys, transportation, weather, world leaders, and much much more. I took the time to visit some of the Websites listed in the book. Here are several that caught my interest: Students will be in for a real gooey education at Silly Putty University. Here they will learn about the history, composition, and many uses of this still-popular toy - the toy with only one moving part. Students will also learn about the many varieties of Silly Putty currently available - the original pink, the 50th year anniversary metallic gold, glow-in-the-dark colors, temperature sensitive color changing colors, and an assortment of bright colors. When ready, students can elect to take the final exam in order to receive their Silly Putty degree!

At-risk high school students in the states of Washington, Texas, Massachusetts, and California "meet" online to discuss teenage pregnancy, drug prevention, Middle East foreign policy, and other topics of current interest. (Jensen, 1991/92) Students of all ages collaboratively produce a newspaper, Global Village News, using input from dozens of worldwide student "news bureaus" linked through more than 15,000 free computer bulletin boards in over 50 countries. The paper is distributed to thousands of users throughout the world. (Rose, 1992) Students from the United States and other countries go on a simulated space shuttle journey, assuming various roles including secondary mission control, selecting alternative landing sites and docking other shuttles. (Clement, 1992) What makes these common educational experiences exciting and unique? They all involve students and teachers from around the world interacting through computer networks.

Bibliography
Most of the books below do not contain a great deal of how-to information about connecting to the Network. This course is intended to fill the gap. But they do tell you what to do once you are on. The first few, which are available by Internet, are especially useful. They do make the network "self-describing". AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET _The Incomplete Guide to the Internet_ (for Macintosh with Microsoft Word onlyfor paper version see below) A very complete guide written by the Education Office of the National Supercomputing Agency (NCSA). It contains a very complete intro- duction to the Internet and classroom Internet projects for K12 teachers. This is the best guide for public school teachers. For paper version, write: Chuck Farmer, 152 CAB, 605 E. Springfield Ave., Champaign, IL 61820. Cost is around $22.00 for 300 pp. A very good guide for how-to information. Unfortunately, the FTP versions are all marked up in a dialect of the TeX typesetting system. They are still somewhat readable though, even if you don't have the TeX system. A Postscript version is also provided. ftp.uu.net:/inet/doc (137.39.1.9)
