Helen Beatrix Potter
Beatrix Potter was considered an amateur artist by some because of her lack of training, but her natural affection for animals and rich imagination made up for any deficiencies she may have had and manifested themselves through her illustrations. Although many of mice, rabbits, kittens and hedgehogs wore clothing, they still exhibited their specific animal traits while still reflecting on the life of children. Her illustrations are just as appealing today as they were ninety years ago. Childhood Helen Beatrix Potter was born on July 28, 1866 in Kensington Square, London, England to Rupert Potter and Helen Leech, but the name Helen was dropped so as not to confuse her with her mother. Both parents having an inheritance from the cotton trade, life in the Potter household was easy and in want for nothing. Rupert Potter was a non-practicing barrister and amateur photographer with influential friends such as Sir John Millais. Potter was virtually raised and educated by nurses and governesses with little interaction by her parents. She was relegated to the third floor nursery where she learned to cope with solitude by drawing and painting. Rupert Potter always had an interest in art and, on occasion, he would bring her to the museum or exhibits at the Royal Academy. The little creatures that she was allowed to keep became her only companions until her brother Bertram was born six years later.
Bertram shared her love for animals and nature, and together, they would draw and study them. At times they would even skin and dissect dead animals to further understand their skeletal structure. During the summer, the Potters would rent a house in the Scottish highlands or the Lake District of northern England. This was a time of great exploration and freedom for the Potter children, roaming the countryside, gathering plants, rocks, fossils and insects, to study and further their scientific knowledge. When Bertram was old enough, he was sent away to boarding school, leaving Potter as lonely as she had ever been. Sleepless nights were spent memorizing the plays of Shakespeare.

THE IMAGINATION OF BEATRIX POTTER

By Marcia Rackow
I llustration from THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT by Beatrix Potter
For over a century, Beatrix Potter's art, her wonderful imagination have affected children and adults all over the world. There's hardly a person who doesn't know The Tale of Peter Rabbit ! Her pictures and stories while charming and delightful, are also deep — and they show something vital and thrilling about imagination which every person, every parent, every child needs to know. As an artist and teacher I've come to love and value her work even more through my study of Aesthetic Realism, the philosophy founded in 1941 by the great American poet and critic Eli Siegel, whose centenary is being celebrated this year. I learned that there are two kinds of imagination in every person: good and bad. In "Imagination, Reality, and Aesthetics," a chapter from his book

Her books, now classics, were unique in that she did all of her own illustrations. She took the genre of children's literature to a new level through her highly accurate and detailed drawings of woodland animals. She insisted that her books be miniatures to fit children's smaller hand size, while at the same time employing a more sophisticated vocabulary and realistic situations in order to challenge children's reading abilities. Beatrix Potter's first passion in life was science. She only pursued the career of children's author after her scientific ambitions were thwarted by the lack of opportunity for women in her time. Twice Potter was rejected by the scientific community: First, by the Royal Botanical Gardens and secondly, by the Linnaean Society of London. Later she would be honored by the latter institution for her highly detailed and accurate drawings of fungi. The more easily accessible opportunity that availed itself to Potter's talent was the career of children's author and illustrator. Like other authoresses during the Victorian period, most notably

Beatrix Potter
Beatrix Potter was born in South Kensington, London, as the only daughter of Rupert Potter, a wealthy rentier . Potter spent a sheltered childhood with her brother Bertram, who was five years younger. She amused herself by painting, using specimens from the Natural History Museum or sketching the nature in the Lake District, where the family spent summer holidays. Potter had several pets, including rabbits. She later described her London home as "my unloved birthplace." Potter never went to school, but was taught at home by a governess. She learned to read from the works of Sir Walter Scott's and Maria Edgeworth. As a young woman she still lived at her parent's house. From the age of fifteen until she was past thirty, she recorded her everyday life in her own secret code-writing. A Happy Pair and was accompanied by verses written by Fredric Weatherley.

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) , Victorian artist and author of children's stories, creator of such winsome and nattily attired characters as Benjamin Bunny, Squirrel Nutkin, and of course Peter Rabbit. Her books have been translated to braille and numerous languages including German, Latin, Welsh, Spanish, French, Japanese and Dutch. Many are still in print and beloved world-wide. Helen Beatrix Potter was born on 28 July 1866 in South Kensington, London, England. Her parents were Helen Leech and Rupert William Potter. Even as a young girl Beatrix, as she was known, loved animals enough to secret them away into the house including rabbits, frogs, kittens, hedgehogs and mice. A bout with rheumatic fever would affect her heart and health for the rest of her life. Though she was quite shy, she was a very creative girl, encouraged by her parents and governesses who taught her to paint and draw. She also kept a journal which illuminates her highly imaginative and sensitive nature. The Potter family spent many summers in the Scottish Highlands and the Lake District of England where Beatrix and her brother Bertram immersed themselves in the natural world, which became a life-long passion and subject of intense study for Potter. She explored the varied geography and flora and fauna, recording her observations of the landscape, fossils, insects, fungi, birds, flowers and animals in sketches, drawings, and watercolours. She also made the acquaintance of a kindly Vicar and writer, Hardwicke Rawnsley, who was also a lover of the Lakeland and advocated for its preservation. He would become a great supporter and mentor to her in her future life as writer.
