Ephemera Site
This is an informal site dedicated to the writings of Marcel Proust that are mostly unavailable elsewhere in English translation.
I began this project in 1999 mainly for my own amusement but hopefully to be of interest to others with a similar fascination for this great writer. I have no qualifications as a translator and make no claims for absolute accuracy, they are simply my best efforts at conveying Proust's sometimes complex but always intriguing thoughts and language into English.
There is no such thing as a "Complete Works of Marcel Proust", it would be vast, and even in French his miscellaneous writings are dispersed across several different collections. And indeed there are even a handful of pieces that are not published in French. My aim is to bring this body of work together for the English reader.
It goes without saying that I am assuming some prior knowledge of Proust's life and work on the part of the reader and there are plenty of other websites and books that can be referred to for background information. But of course I would be delighted if my efforts were to arouse further interest for the casual browser.
I am always open to constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement.

Proust, Marcel (1871-1922) page: beau monde . He lived to regret this careless decision when he discovered what the book was really like. However, he never approved of its representations of what he regarded as the negative aspects of homosexuality. The Baron de Charlus represented most of the things from which, in both his writings and his own life, Gide was at pains to distance himself. As he said in a letter to Proust (June 14, 1914), he was worried that readers would take the complex individual Charlus as a representative of a type. It seems he did not want to be tarred with that brush. Sponsor Message.

Alain de Botton - Wie Proust Ihr Leben verändern kann
Originaltitel: How Proust can change your Life
Roman. S. Fischer Verlag 1999
253 Seiten, ISBN: 3596137349

Biography
French writer classified as one of the greatest French novelists of the 1900's. An author of complex style, he was called immoral and decadent for several decades before he was recognized. His most noted work was "Remembrance of Things Past." Proust was born to bourgeois parents, the son of a doctor and a mother from a rich and cultured Jewish family. From his childhood and throughout his life, Proust suffered from chronic asthma attacks. He was given a good education and his literary talent emerged during his high school years. In 1896 he published his first book, a collection of short stories, essays and poems which was not too successful. He devoted several years to translating and annotating the works of the English art historian John Ruskin. His health began to fail in 1902 when he was 31. Proust was reluctantly obliged to lead an extremely retiring and careful lifestyle. The death of his mother in September 1905 set him into a period of deep mourning and introspection. In February 1907, he published an article in Le Figaro in which he attempted to analyze two elements which would be fundamental to his future psychological approach to literature: memory and guilt.
