  • ASIN: Book Description Customer Reviews: Of recipes and desserts I completely agree with D.S. Heersink's assessment of Nabokov's Onegin translation. While undoubtedly accurate to the nth degree, it is tedious to read, to say the least. If you are studying Russian, perhaps the Nabokov translation might be appropriate; however, if you expect to derive pleasure from reading Eugene Onegin, by all means go with Falen. Someone else commented on the fact that poetry cannot be translated. That is pure nonsense, though reading Nabokov's English version of Eugene Onegin, one would indeed come to the conclusion that a translation of the work from the Russian is impossible. To quickly correct that erroneous impression, pick up the James Falen translation. Those interested in translation issues of all kinds should not miss Douglas Hofstadter's "Le ton beau de Marot" (which, incidentally, has much to say about Nabokov in general and his Eugene Onegin in particular). Come to think of it, y

I N A sense Alexander Pushkin is the beginning of real Russian drama. With his first play, Boris Godunov (written in 1825), he broke, or perhaps we should say, established, several precedents. First of all, his plot was chosen from a somewhat legendary incident of Russian history. His characters were real Russians, thinking, speaking, living as Russians. Instead of following French or German examples, as writers for the stage had done heretofore, he experimented with romantic tragedy after the style of Shakespeare . As a reading play, Boris Godunov is, in spots, superb; as an acting play it leaves much to be desired, and as a matter of fact did not reach production. Its influence on later dramatic writers was considerable, however. Alexander Pushkin on his father's side was descended from one of the oldest families of the Russian gentry. His mother was the grand-daughter of Peter the Great's Abyssinian Engineer-General. The young Alexander's first poems appeared when he was but fifteen, and by the time he left school he was regarded as a rival by the acknowledged literary leaders of the day. After Pushkin left school, he lived a riotous life in St. Petersburg as a member of the most brilliant and dissipated crowd in the capital. Seditious utterances in certain of his writings caused his banishment from St. Petersburg, and finally what was almost an incarceration on his mother's estate. When somewhat later he was pardoned and permitted to return to the capital, he found that under the pretense of favoring him the Czar was in reality curtailing both his personal and literary liberty. When later on he was appointed to a court position simply so that the Czar could invite his beautiful wife to the court balls, Pushkin's bitterness knew no bounds. He was powerless to change the situation, however, and in 1837 challenged one of his wife's admirers to a duel which resulted in the writer's death.

    The Snowstorm
    by Alexander Poushkin
[from The Prose Tales of Alexander Poushkin , translated from the Russian by T. Keane, London: George Bell and Sons, 1895] T OWARDS the end of the year 1811, a memorable period for us, the good Gavril Gavrilovitch R was living on his domain of Nenaradova. He was celebrated throughout the district for his hospitality and kindheartedness. The neighbours were constantly visiting him: some to eat and drink; some to play at five copeck "Boston" with his wife, Praskovia Petrovna; and some to look at their daughter, Maria Gavrilovna, a pale, slender girl of seventeen. She was considered a wealthy match, and many desired her for themselves or for their sons. Maria Gavrilovna had been brought up on French novels, and consequently was in love. The object of her choice was a poor sub-lieutenant in the army, who was then on leave of absence in his village. It need scarcely be mentioned that the young man returned her passion with equal ardour, and that the parents of his beloved one, observing their mutual inclination, forbade their daughter to think of him, and received him worse than a discharged assessor. Our lovers corresponded with one another and daily saw each other alone in the little pine wood or near the old chapel. There they exchanged vows of eternal love, lamented their cruel fate, and formed various plans. Corresponding and conversing in this way, they arrived quite naturally at the following conclusion:

The Nonrhymed Lines in the Rhymed Poetry and the Rhymed Lines in the Nonrhymed Poetry
    http://slavica.com/recent/rb19.htm
    J. Thomas Shaw: Pushkin's Poetics of the Unexpected: The Nonrhymed Lines in the Rhymed Poetry and the Rhymed Lines in the Nonrhymed Poetry , 369 p., 1994 (ISBN: 0-89357-245-4), cloth: $29.95. Pushkin's unexpected nonrhymes and rhymes consitute an important part of his poetics of the unexpected; however, hitherto they have never been studied in any detail, and, indeed have only rarely been even touched upon. This study analyzes individually all the instances of unexpected nonrhymes of Pushkin's completed rhymed poetry (with the exception of Evgenii Onegin ), and all the instances of unexpected rhymes in the completed nonrhymed poetry , as found in the basic texts in "large Academy" textual editions (with variants) of 1937-59, and published in Shaw's Pushkin's Rhymes: A Dictionary (1974). ("Completed poems" are those that Pushkin published or tried or wished to publish, and thus show that he was willing for the public to judge his artistry by them.) Emphasis in this study is on the final text, but the study of the variants shows in detail that Pushkin's unexpected nonrhymes and rhymes are by no means the result of carelesness or negligence. Each poetic "imperfection" of this kind has an artistic function to fulfill; some of the most effective of them were introduced during final revisions in the publication process. This study fills an important gap in studies of Pushkin's poetry and poetics. It should be of interest and importance to almost everybody who reads Pushkin's poetry in Russian, from the professional Pushkinist to the beginning graduate (or undergraduate) student of Russian literature who may be reading any of these poems in Russian for the first time.

    Study Notes
The Golden Age of Russian Poetry
The period from 1820 to about 1835 is known as the "Golden Age" of Russian poetry. During this time poetry dominated literary art, and a large number of very good poets were offering their works to the public. One of your textbooks, Mirsky's History ofRussian Literature , contains factual and evaluative material on such poets as Zhukovsky, Baratynsky, Batiushkov, Davydov, Vyazemsky, and Delvig. The works of these writers provided the period with poetic depth and breadth; however, each of them knew and acknowledged the genius of the greatest poet of the periodAleksandr Pushkin. Still today, Pushkin is as revered by Russians as Shakespeare is by speakers of English.
Aleksandr Pushkin (1799-1837) Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin was born on May 26, 1799, in Moscow. His father's family traced its lineage back seven hundred years, to the historical beginnings ofthe Russian state. The Pushkin family had a history of being at odds with the established authority. Aleksandr Pushkin shared that fate, both as a writer and in his personal life. His mother's family wThe Life of Aleksandr Pushkin (1799-1837)as descended from an Ethiopian prince named IbrahimHannibal. Prince Hannibal had come to Russia during the reign of Peter the Great, and in due course he became an important general in the Russian army. So outstanding was his service to the state that Tsar Peter conferred nobility on Hannibal and his descendants. From a social point of view, Pushkin's descent made him a combination of the "old" nobility of family and the "new" nobility, created by Peter the Great, of service to the state.
