Rabelais, Francis de Sales and the (Revised 2/98) Alexander T. Pocetto, O.S. F.S. Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales
The casual reader might be surprised to see how St. Francis de Sales, the gentleman saint, could in any way be linked or associated with François Rabelais, whose writings are at times admittedly scabrous and obscene. And yet even in the 17th century, an an admirer of Francis de Sales apparently saw a close relationship. He had portraits of Rabelais along with Erasmus and the saint in his study and referred to these men as his " dieux tutelaires. " It might even surprise the saint himself to have his name mentioned in the same breath as Rabelais, especially in view of the opinion he had of him. In a letter to Celse-Bénigne, son of St. Jane de Chantal, as he was going off to court, de Sales advises the young man not to read that "infamous Rabelais and certain other writers of our era who make a career out of doubting everything, of despising everything and making fun of the maxims of antiquity." It is Rabelais' mocking and scoffing attitude that the saint finds particularly offensive. Perhaps this severe judgment can be explained by the fact that the saint probably read a poor or incomplete edition of Rabelais' works.

, a celebrated French wit, was the son of an apothecary, and born about 1483, at Chinon, in the province of Touraine. He was bred up in a convent of Franciscan friars in Poictou, the convent of Fontenaile-Comte, and received into their order. His strong inclination and taste for literature and the sciences made him transcend the bounds which restrained the learned in his times so that he not only became a great linguist, but an adept in all branches of knowledge. His uncommon capacity and merit soon excited the jealousy of his brethren. Hence he was envied by some others, through ignorance, thought him a conjuror; and all hated and abused him, particularly because he studied Greek ; the novelty of that language making them esteem it, not only barbarous, but antichristian. This we collect from a Greek epistle of Budaeus to Rabelais, in which he praises him highly for his great knowledge in that tongue, and exclaims against the stupidity and malice of the friars. Having endured' their persecutions for a long time, hef obtained permission of pope

Rabelais, Francis

Introduction
While reading Moby Dick in April 2000, I was astounded by Melville's enormous vocabulary. I wondered what was Moby Dick's total vocabulary and how it compared to other works. Thanks to the Project Gutenberg , an online resource for literature, (and copious spare-time) I was able to download a considerable sample of works and perform a word analysis. The following are the results from this informal study including relative vocabulary densities and anomalous word usage. Please sign my guestbo0k if you find this interesting or helpful. Thanks, Zack
Sample Database
The works represented in this study come exclusively from the Project Gutenberg (PG). While most PG works are included, the sample is not complete; some works have been eliminated for obvious reasons (e.g. Pi to 10,000 digits) while others works were eliminated because they were malformed or unavailable. Some books in the Project Gutenberg are split into several seperate volumes or alternatively several works are combined into one; this may effect the sample slightly, especially the Anomalous Word Charts . In some cases, I have manually combined multiple volumes into one for logical consistency.
