Aboard the Swallow, John, Susan, Titty and Roger find themselves under attack from the fierce Amazon Pirates, Nancy and Peggy. Customer Reviews: Reading aloud The Swallows and Amazons series was one of my favorites when I was a child. The story, set in the Lake District of England where Wordsworth and other great poets grew up, is a gentle adventure tale about children camping out on an island and rigging a little sailboat. It is slower paced than children are used to today. But I think a sensitive boy or girl would find it reassuring that the children solve their own problems of navigation etc. While it didn't bother me as a child that the language was distinctly British, as I'd been prepared by the Winnie the Pooh stories, and Wind in the Willows, I would recommend Swallows and Amazons as a bedtime story to be read aloud by an adult reader. The reader could then explain the language. A map of the UK would help too, as the story is set in the Lake District.

This section is devoted to the man, his books and his life Arthur Michell Ransome was born in Leeds in 1884 and educated in Windermere and Rugby. His family spent their summers at Nibthwaite, to the south of Coniston Water. In 1902, Ransome abandoned a chemistry degree to become a publisher's office boy in London. He used this precarious existence to practise writing, producing several minor works before Bohemia in London (1907), a study of London's artistic scene and his first significant book. An interest in folklore, together with a desire to escape an unhappy first marriage, led Ransome to St Petersburg, where he was ideally placed to observe and report on the Russian Revolution. He knew many of the leading Bolsheviks, including Lenin, Radek, Trotsky and the latter's secretary, Evgenia Shvelpina. These contacts led to persistent but unproven accusations that he "spied" for both the Bolsheviks and Britain. Ransome married Evgenia and returned to England in 1924 Settling in the Lake District, he spent the late 1920s as a foreign correspondent and highly-respected angling columnist for the

These tell of school-holiday adventures of children, mostly in the Lake District and the Norfolk Broads . Many of the books involve sailing; other common subjects include fishing and camping . The books remain so popular that they provide a basis of a tourist industry around Windermere and Coniston Water – the two lakes that Ransome used as the basis for his fictional North Country lake. Introduction
What exactly were the Swallow and the Amazon like, those famous sailboats of Arthur Ransome's books Swallows and Amazons and Swallowdale ? Many readers would love to recreate the adventures of the Walker and Blackett children for themselves, or for their own children, and they want to learn more about the boats. The boats of these special stories were real boats, just as many of the locations in the stories are real places. This essay describes what we know of the Swallow and the Amazon In the summer of 1928, Ernest Altounyan, a friend of Arthur Ransome, came to Coniston Water with his family and soon thereafter bought two boats for his children. The children were Taqui (age eleven), Susan (age nine), Titty (age eight), Roger (age six), and Bridgit (nearly three). The children became the models for characters in Arthur Ransome's books, and the boats became the Swallow and Amazon . Susan and Roger crewed the Swallow , while Taqui and Titty crewed the Mavis , which was the model for the Amazon . The Mavis Amazon ), may be seen today, in good order, at the Windermere Steamboat Museum near Lake Windermere. When the Altounyans later moved to Syria, they gave the

Dramatising We Didn't Mean to go to Sea
(These were some notes I wrote some months ago, which I was asked to turf out by contributors to Tarboard - I hope they are of interest!)
Given a strong script and strong performances, We Didn't Mean to go to Sea has the potential to be the most dramatic and exciting of all the Swallows' stories when adapted for screen or stage. There is genuine peril, and a claustrophobic atmosphere with great cinematic potential: the four heroes trapped in a small boat (the Goblin) and surrounded by a ferocious sea; the arrival at the strange foreign port, hoping that the Dutch harbour pilot will not realise there are only children on board, etc.
There are also a number of key challenges:
    • most of the action takes place across one night in a small boat in the dark
some of the favourite characters of other books (e.g. The Amazons and Captain Flint) are absent; instead the Swallows are more-or-less on their own
though it works perfectly well in the book, for modern children used to 'mild peril' right up to the end, the comfortable journey home with 'Daddy' at the helm could be something of an anti-climax after all the excitement
