Introduction
This is a legal research guide to Canon Law in the Catholic Church (both Roman and Eastern Rites), the Orthodox Churches, the Anglican Churches, the Lutheran Churches, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (L.D.S. or Mormons). Why should American legal scholars and practitioners care about religious law?  Canon law has affected the development of common law in areas such as marriage and inheritance.  In addition, religious law may induce administrative behavior that must be explained at some point during litigation or as part of a transaction (e.g., a sale or purchase of real estate).  For example, New York currently has a secular divorce law originally designed to address an issue in Orthodox Jewish law. "Canon" comes from the Greek word kanon , meaning "reed, rod, or ruler."

The Latin edition was published in The documents which make up the Book of Concord , composed between , are believed by Lutherans to be true and faithful explanations of the most important teachings of the Bible . The word "concordia" is a Latin word that means "harmony" and, literally, "with one heart." The book was thus named "Concordia," indicating its purpose as a collection of statements of faith intended to give common voice to the convictions of those who accepted these confessions as their own, and as a means to establish and maintain doctrinal harmony. The first documents in the book are the "Three Ecumenical Creeds ," the Apostles' Creed Nicene Creed , and Athanasian Creed , statements of Christian faith in wide use throughout the Christian church before the East-West Schism of . The other documents come from the earliest years of the Lutheran Reformation. They include the Augsburg Confession , the Apology (Defense) of the Augsburg Confession , both written chiefly by Philipp Melanchthon , then the Small and Large Catechism by Martin Luther, his

This follows St. Paul's directive: "that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment."
