Audiobook: Getting of Wisdom, The by Richardson, Henry Handel
The Getting of Wisdom tells the story of Laura Rambotham, a 12-year-old girl who is just starting at her boarding school. This is based on Henry Handel Richardson's experiences of her own school, the Prebysterian Ladies College in central Melbourne. The story goes through her friends and enemies and all the life of a boarding school in early 20th century Australia, and all the subjects and learning too. Laura learns a lot but her education does not satisfy her, and her social life is thrown upon her as very different from her peers. - Summary by Bronwyn Kate.

Richardson, Henry Handel,
pseudonym of ETHEL FLORENCE LINDESAY ROBERTSON, RICHARDSON (b. Jan. 3, 1870, Melbourned. March 20, 1946, Fairlight, Sussex, Eng.), Australian novelist whose trilogy The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, combining description of an Australian immigrant's life and work in the goldfields with a powerful character study, is considered the crowning achievement of modern Australian fiction to that time. From 1883 to 1887 Richardson was a pupil at the Presbyterian Ladies' College in Melbourne. In 1888 she left Australia to study music in Leipzig and spent the rest of her life abroad, making only one brief visit to Australia in 1912. In Leipzig she met J.G. Robertson, whom she married in Dublin in 1895 and who in 1904 was appointed first professor of German Literature at London University. She abandoned the idea of becoming a concert pianist and began writing. In Germany she began her first novel, Maurice Guest (1908), the story of a young English music student in Leipzig whose career and life are ruined by a tragic love affair. In 1904 she and her husband settled in England. Her second novel, The Getting of Wisdom (1910), is an account of her life at the boarding school in Melbourne. On completing it she began the trilogy that occupied the next 20 years of her life

Richardson, Henry Handel, pseud. of Ethel Richardson Robertson, , Australian novelist, b. Melbourne. Her years of study at the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Melbourne, were reflected in her book The Getting of Wisdom (1910). After studying piano at Leipzig she turned to writing, living mainly in Germany until 1903 and then in England. Her first novel, Maurice Guest (1908), is the story of a music student's disastrous infatuation. The trilogy The Fortunes of Richard Mahony (1930), which presents an accurate and outstanding picture of Australian life, is considered her major work. Her writing, clear and austere in style, has been characterized as combining romantic insights with scientific attention to detail.
