    CHAPTER V
THE INTERRUPTED SUPPER I arrived at the Red House before Inspector Gatton. A constable was on duty at the gate and as I came up and paused he regarded me rather doubtfully until I told him that I had an appointment with Gatton. I stared up the drive towards the house. It was not, apparently, a very old building, presenting some of the worst features of the mid-Victorian period, and from whence it derived its name I could not conjecture unless from the fact that the greater part of the facade was overgrown with some kind of red creeper. The half-moon formed by the crescent-shaped carriage-way and the wall bordering the road was filled with rather unkempt shrubbery, laurels and rhododendrons for the most part, from amid which arose several big trees. In the blaze of the afternoon sun the place looked commonplace enough with estate agents' bills pasted in the dirty windows, and it was difficult to conceive that it had been the scene of the mysterious crime of which at that hour all London was talking and which later was to form a subject of debate throughout the civilized world. Gatton joined me within a few minutes of my arrival. He was accompanied by Constable Bolton with whom I had first visited the Red House. Bolton was now in plain clothes, and he had that fish-out-of-water appearance which characterizes the constable in mufti. Indeed he looked rather dazed, and on arriving before the house he removed his bowler and mopped his red face with a large handkerchief, nodding to me as he did so.

Sax Rohmer (1883-1959) - original name ARTHUR HENRY SARSFIELD WARD - wrote also as Michael Furey Prolific English mystery writer, best known for the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu and his opponents Denis Nayland Smith, Dr. Petrie, named after the Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, and the beautiful Kâramanéh, the source of Petrie's daydreams, whose "eyes held a challenge wholly Oriental in its appeal." In spite of Rohmer's popularity, his family lived for long periods in poverty because of the bad deals he made with publishers. "Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, a close-shaven skull, and long, magnetic eyes of the true cat-green. Invest him with all the cruel cunning of an entire Eastern race, accumulated in one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present, with all the resources, if you will, of a wealthy government - which, however, already has denied all knowledge of his existence. Imagine that awful being, and you have a mental picture of Dr Fu Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate in one man..." (from The Mystery of Dr Fu Manchu Sax Rohmer was born Arthur Henry Ward in Birmingham of Irish parents. His father, William Ward, was employed as an office clerk and eventually held the position of office manager. Rohmer's mother, Margaret Mary (Furey) Ward, was neurasthenic and increasingly dependent on alcohol. Young Sax Rohmer received no formal schooling until he was nine or ten years old, but his father probably taught his son to read. Rohmer adopted the name Sarsfield at the age of 18, impressed by his mother's alcoholic claims of being descended from a famous 17th-century Irish general Patrick Sarsfield. He later explained that the pen name came from 'sax' which was Saxon for 'blade' and 'rohmer' which meant 'roamer'.

Another Great Fu-Manchu Book! This book also goes by the title of The Return of Fu-Manchu and I believe is the 2nd in the series. I really enjoy Rohmer's work. He knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat and I would say he is one of the best English suspense/mystery writers of all time. Yes, this book is a bit racist, but keep in mind it was also written a long time ago in a much different time in England. If you liked the original Fu-Manchu novel then you'll like this one as well.

A word from our supporters: File extension PLS Bat Wing By Sax Rohmer Contents Chapter I Paul Harley Of Chancery Lane Chapter Ii The Voodoo Swamp Chapter Iii The Vampire Bat ... Chapter Xxxv An Afterword The End Colonel Menendez lighted his new cigarette. "Mr. Harley," he confessed, "I regret that I ever referred to this suspicion of mine. Indeed it is hardly a suspicion, it is what I may call a desperate doubt. Do you say that, a desperate doubt?" "I think I follow you," said Harley. "The fact is this, I only know of one person within ten miles of Cray's Folly who has ever visited Cuba." "Ah." "I have no other scrap of evidence to associate him I with my shadowy enemy. This being so, you will pardon me if I ask you to forget that I ever referred to his existence." He spoke the words with a sort of lofty finality, and accompanied them with a gesture of the hands which really left Harley no alternative but to drop the subject. Again their glances met, and it was patent to me that underlying all this conversation was something beyond my ken. What it was that Harley suspected I could not imagine, nor what it was that Colonel Menendez desired to conceal; but tension was in the very air. The Spaniard was on the defensive, and Paul Harley was puzzled, irritated. It was a strange interview, and one which in the light of after events I recognized to possess extraordinary significance. That sixth sense of Harley's was awake, was prompting him, but to what extent he understood its promptings at that hour I did not know, and have never known to this day. Intuitively, I believe, as he sat there staring at Colonel Menendez, he began to perceive the shadow within a shadow which was the secret of Cray's Folly, which was the thing called Bat Wing, which was the devilish force at that very hour alive and potent in our midst.

Chronology of Dr. Fu Manchu and Sir Denis Nayland Smith by Win Scott Eckert (with thanks to Dr. Lawrence Knapp; special thanks to Rick Lai for putting some events in the Fu Manchu series in historical context) Some novels are narrated by first person characters; all novels "edited" by Sax Rohmer unless otherwise noted. Nayland Smith (later Sir Denis Nayland Smith of the British Secret Service), nephew of Sherlock Holmes, appears in most of the Fu Manchu adventures as Fu Manchu's adversary. Fu Manchu also matched wits with detective Solar Pons on more than one occasion, in short stories written by Pons' associate, Dr. Lyndon Parker. These were "edited" by August Derleth and, later, Basil Copper.
