1. Ross, Edmund G. - KS-Cyclopedia - 1912
Kansas a cyclopedia of state history, c1912 prepared for KSGenWeb project for posting on Blue Skyways
http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1912/r/ross_edmund_g.html
Transcribed from volume II of Kansas: a cyclopedia of state history, embracing events, institutions, industries, counties, cities, towns, prominent persons, etc. ... / with a supplementary volume devoted to selected personal history and reminiscence. Standard Pub. Co. Chicago : 1912. 3 v. in 4. : front., ill., ports.; 28 cm. Vols. I-II edited by Frank W. Blackmar. Transcribed July 2002 by Carolyn Ward. Ross, Edmund G. F. H. Hodder, of the University of Kansas, wrote to the Nation on May 13, 1907: "No man was ever more foully abused, yet he bore personal abuse and retirement to private life, alike with patience and without bitterness. If the people of Kansas wish to atone for the injury they did Mr. Ross during his lifetime they can scarcely do better than place his statue in the capitol at Washington, in the hall reserved for notable men of the states. Such a statue would commemorate an heroic act, a valiant soldier and an honest man." William Carruth, also of the University of Kansas, says: "It goes hard with us to admit that he was wiser than the majority of us. . . . Major Ross returned to his state, faced obloquy and slander, and earned the living of a poor but honest man, with the same silent endurance with which he met the stress of the great impeachment trial." Foster D. Coburn, secretary of the Kansas state board of agriculture, said on May 13, 1910: "For the vote cast by Senator Ross against the conviction of President Andrew Johnson, I was, at the time bitter and indignant beyond expression. Now, forty-odd years after, I am firmly of the opinion that Senator Ross acted with a lofty patriotism, regardless of what he knew must be the ruinous consequences to himself."

Listings of those who are (or were during their lifetime) Masons serves to remind us of the many notables who have - of their own free will - chosen to associate with this noble institution. Those who preach anti-Masonic hate must - in the depth of their souls - wonder how it is that so many have been (supposedly) deceived - while they have found the 'truth'.... In a seeming 'sour grapes' fashion, some will argue that all of these men have been deceived (a pretty remarkable feat for those of such stature) while others will contend they are/were part of a New World Order conspiracy. What is not arguable is that they represent all walks of life and that they were - in their respective ways - LEADERS! MacArthur, General Douglas - A former US Chief of Staff, he commanded the Allied Forces in the South Pacific during World War II. He promised the Filipino people "I shall return" to save them from the occupying Japanese Forces. He was ultimately removed from military leadership by another Mason, President Harry S. Truman.

U.S. Presidents. I am frequently asked during the course of my Masonic Lectures if I could give any information on which United States Presidents were Freemasons. I asked my good friend Bro. Richard Radi of Virginia for information for our Right Angle and he came up with some interesting information. Washington, George - 1st President of the United States. Following his death, his widow sent locks of his hair (a common practice of the time) to Masons throughout the country and such revered treasures were the object of great appreciation. To this day, a lock of his hair sent to the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts is carried in a golden urn preceding the entry of the Grand Master at the Annual Meeting of the Grand Lodge. 1789-1797. Fredericksburg Lodge, Virginia. Monroe, James 5th President of the United States (1817-1825), whose administration was marked by the acquisition of Florida (1819), the Missouri Compromise (1820), in which Missouri was declared a slave state, and the profession of the Monroe Doctrine (1823), which declared U.S. opposition to European interference in the Americas. Jackson, Andrew - 7th President of the U.S. Grand Master of Tennessee 2 terms. 1829-37.

Revere was a Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. Rhodes, Elisha Hunt - If you saw filmmaker Ken Burns' epic production 'The Civil War', you are surely familiar with this name! Brother Rhodes diary was one of the chief sources quoted throughout and in it, he speaks of an incident at Gettysburg where he witnessed Union soldiers retrieve the body of a 'Rebel' and give it a proper burial because they had determined that he was a brother Mason. Rhodes states that he did not understand these actions but within a year he joined the fraternity while on leave in Rhode Island and in 1892-1893 was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island.
