Rossetti as an illustrator
The Palace of Art Rossetti made very few book illustrations, but those he produced had an important influence on book illustration during the 1860s and afterwards. He designed five pictures for the Moxon Tennyson (a book which incidentally can still be found in its second edition in second-hand bookshops). He produced a single illustration for Allingham's The Music Master , which also contains one picture by Arthur Hughes and six by John Everett Millais . Apart from these, Rossetti drew four illustrations for works of poetry by his sister, Christina Rossetti. Golden head by golden head Rossetti-influenced illustration can be found among the works of many later illustrators working throughout the latter 19th Century, and more widely, Pre-Raphaelite style illustration was being produced well into the early 20th Century. D(ante) G(abriel) Rossetti (1828-1882) - original name Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti Brother of poet Christina Rossetti , painter and poet too, who was in the 1840s one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Although the movement started to lose its attraction by the mid-1850s, new disciples Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris brought with them fresh enthusiasm. Rossetti's poems are distinguished by fantasy, leading the reader to times past, to medieval colour, Arthurian legend, and Dantesque mysticism. I have been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell;
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.

(from 'Sudden Light', 1881) For many years Rossetti was known only as a painter. On the other hand he had to face for some time the problem that his paintings were not bought. He idealized his subjects, and used literary themes of medieval romances. His early poems, such as 'The Blessed Damozel', a highly symbolic work, and 'My Sister's Sleep', in which death visits a family on a Christmas Eve, were published in the Pre-Raphaelite magazine The Germ in 1850. "I said, "Full knowledge does not grieve: / This which upon my spirit dwells / Perhaps would have been sorrow else: / But I am glad 'tis Christmas Eve." (from 'My Sister's Sleep') The publication survived for only four issues. Rossetti enjoyed a modest success as a writer when his translations in THE EARLY ITALIAN POETS appeared in 1861. Also the art critic Ruskin started to buy his paintings and spread Rossetti's reputation.

Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Dante Alighieri) Next (Danube) Dante Gabriel Rossetti (Self portrait, 1847, National Portrait Gallery, London) Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti , later Dante Gabriel Rossetti (May 12, 1828 – April 10, 1882) was an English poet and painter who is considered one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite movement in the arts, as well as one of the most important authors of the Victorian era in English literature. Rossetti, like his fellow Pre-Raphaelites, believed that English literature had drifted astray from the fundamental principles of artistic integrity that Rossetti believed could be found in the painting and poetry of the medieval world. Rossetti's Pre-Raphaelite movement bore a number of distinct similarities to the English Romanticism , and Rossetti was in fact deeply influenced by Romantic poets John Keats and William Blake . As a poet, however, Rossetti was distinct from the Romantics due to his particular fascination with medieval literature. In his poetry, Rossetti attempted to capture the deeply symbolic and at times arcane style of medieval poets, which results in some of the most interesting and, at times, baffling poetry in the English language. Like many other poets of the Victorian era, Rossetti was prone to extremely florid languages, and his poetry may seem somewhat baroque to a contemporary reader. Nonetheless, Rossetti had a considerable influence on the development of late nineteenth-century poetry. As one of the most successful of all Victorian poets, Rossetti had a direct influence on a number of poets of the succeeding generation, among them the early

Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti . His family and friends called him "Gabriel", but in publications he put the name Dante first (in honor of Dante Alighieri). He was the brother of poet Christina Rossetti, the critic William Michael Rossetti, and author Maria Francesca Rossetti, and was a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt. Toward the end of his life, Rossetti sank into a morbid state, darkened by his drug addiction to chloral and increasing mental instability, possibly worsened by his reaction to savage critical attacks on his disinterred (1869) poetry from the manuscript poems he had buried with his wife. He spent his last years as a withdrawn recluse. On Easter Sunday, 1882, he died at the country house of a friend, where he had gone in yet another vain attempt to recover his health, which had been destroyed by chloral as his wife's had been destroyed by laudanum. He is buried at Birchington-on-Sea, Kent, England. His grave is visited regularly by admirers of his life's work and achievements and this can be seen by fresh flowers placed there regularly. -
