Home Library Science Scientists Count Rumford (Benjamin Thompson) Library of Congress [b. Woburn , Massachusetts, March 26, 1753, d. Auteuil , near Paris, August 21, 1814] Benjamin Thompson grew up in the American colonies and became a spy for the British, which forced him to flee to England in 1776. He worked for the British government and was knighted by King George III in 1784. He then moved to Munich in southern Germany, where he was made a count of the Holy Roman Empire: Count Rumford. Rumford's major scientific contribution concerned the nature of heat. At that time it was widely believed that heat is a fluid form of matter. While boring (drilling out) cannons, Rumford discovered that more heat was released than could possibly have been contained in the metal. He concluded that the process of boring produced the heat, and said that heat should be considered a form of motion. Rumford applied his understanding of heat to improving fireplaces so that they better reflected heat and carried away smoke. He invented the kitchen stove , drip coffeepot , pressure cooker , and thermal underwear

American-born British physicist and inventor. In 1798, impressed by the seemingly inexhaustible amounts of heat generated in the boring of a cannon, he published his theory that heat is a mode of vibratory motion, not a substance.
Rumford spied for the British in the American Revolution, and was forced to flee from America to England 1776. He travelled in Europe, and was created a count of the Holy Roman Empire for services to the elector of Bavaria 1791.
Rumford devised the domestic range - the 'fire in a box' - and fireplaces incorporating all the features now considered essential in open fires and chimneys, such as the smoke shelf and damper.
Rumford was born in Massachusetts and was self-educated. In Bavaria he became war and police minister as well as grand chamberlain to the elector. He cofounded the Royal Institution in London 1799, and two years later moved to France.
In Bavaria, Rumford employed beggars from the streets to manufacture military uniforms, and took responsibility for feeding them. A study of nutrition led him to devise many recipes, emphasizing vegetable soup and potatoes. Meanwhile soldiers were being employed in gardening to produce the vegetables. His search for an alternative to alcoholic drinks led to the promotion of coffee and the design of the first percolator.

Anglo-American physicist, inventor, and politician who was a pioneer in the development of modern ideas about the nature of heat . Benjamin Thompson, later Count Rumford, was born in Woburn, Massachusetts and had little in the way of formal education. He was a loyalist, and at the start of the American War of Independence he came to Britain, and eventually became Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry for the Colonies. It was about this time that he began his experiments concerning heat. In 1779 he was elected to a fellowship of the Royal Society. Three years later he was knighted by King George III.
After the end of the war Thompson went to Bavaria, Germany, and became Minister of War, helping to reorganize the army there. He made such an impression on the Bavarian authorities that he was given the title Count Rumford.
Later he returned to England, where he helped to found the Royal Institution (1799). After this he went to live in France, and married the widow of the famous French chemist Antoine Lavoisier . He died in 1814 at Auteuil, at the age of 61.

July 23, 2009 C ount Rumford, for whom the Rumford fireplace is named, was born Benjamin Thompson in Woburn, Massachusetts in 1753 and, because he was a loyalist, he left (abruptly) with the British in 1776. He spent much of his life as an employee of the Bavarian government where he received his title, "Count of the Holy Roman Empire." Rumford is known primarily for the work he did on the nature of heat. B ack in England, Rumford applied his knowledge of heat to the improvement of fireplaces. He made them smaller and shallower with widely angled covings so they would radiate better. And he streamlined the throat, or in his words "rounded off the breast" so as to "remove those local hindrances which forcibly prevent the smoke from following its natural tendency to go up the chimney..." R umford wrote two essays detailing his improvements on fireplaces in 1796 and in 1798. He was well known and widely read* in his lifetime, and almost immediately in the 1790s his "Rumford fireplace" became state of the art worldwide. More About Rumford: Rumford the Scientist
