4to. viii + (4) + 205 + (1)pp, 14 plates etched by Ruskin from his own drawings, printed slip advertising preparation of Ruskin's Stones of Venice and 16pp publisher's adverts at end. Publisher's decorative stamped cloth (with design on upper and lower covers which features the Seven Lamps of Architecture), neatly rebacked using original spine. Plates slightly spotted. First edition of Ruskin's celebrated book discussing architecture in terms of the lamps of sacrifice, truth, beauty, power, life, memory and obedience. Its direct or subliminal influence on attitudes to architecture in nineteenth-century Britain and further afield was profound, even if his lamps give "not so much light but splendour" (the phrase is Whewell's, quoted by Pevsner, Some Architectural Writers, 1972, p.152). 8. John Ruskin
Brief biography of John Ruskin, from the Victorian Station.
    http://www.victorianstation.com/authorruskin.htm
    John Ruskin
John Ruskin, the greatest Victorian bar Victoria, was an artist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, philosopher, and, importantly here, the pre-eminent art critic of his time. He provided the impetus that gained respectability for the Pre-Raphaelites. Ruskin's letter to The Times in 1851, supporting the much-derided Pre-Raphaelites for their naturalism and truth to nature, marked a turning point in their perception by the public. In a second letter, he wrote that the Pre-Raphaelites might "lay the foundation of a school of art nobler than the world has seen for 300 years." When, after this, Ruskin met the Pre-Raphaelites, he encouraged them in their ideals, acting as tutor, mentor, and generous supporter to Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt, as well as later artists in a similar spirit such as John Brett and John William Inchbold. He was a long-time friend of the children's illustrator Kate Greenaway, and also of the bird-painter H. S. Marks. Ruskin taught Pre-Raphaelite style drawing at the Working Men's College in London for some years, enlisting Rossetti to teach figure and watercolor painting, and afterwards Ford Madox Brown to fill the same position. Afterwards, he left London, becoming Slade Professor of Art at Oxford (where there is an art college named after him) and then removing to the Lake District where he helped to start the Environmental Movement.

John Ruskin: The Stones of Venice - "Venetian Index"
This is an electronic edition of the so-called "Venetian Index", a list of buildings in Venice with descriptions created by John Ruskin as an appendix to his work "The Stones of Venice" In 1850, John Ruskin travelled to Venice in the company of his wife Effie and his assistant John Hobbes. As part of the preparatory work he had Hobbes learn the daguerreotype process of photography which had been then recently invented
However, Venice is the initial point, but not the target of his monumental work of architectural theory published in 1853 in three volumes as "Stones of Venice". The "Stones" are not a history of architecture, but the abundance of details given by Ruskin is still relevant for modern scholarship. Much of the work is dedicated social criticism of the industrialisation in England during the Victorian Age, and Venetian architecure of the Middle Ages, especially the Ducal Palace , is not only regarded as an ideal architecture, but as an effigy of an ideal society. For Ruskin, the Doge's palace was a model of all perfection . It cannot surprise that the late renaissance and baroque architecture ( grotesque renaissance ) does, according to Ruskin's moralism, symbolize the decay of the "Serenissima" herself. The description of

John Ruskin , the son of a prosperous wine merchant, was born in London in 1819. After being educated at home he studied at Oxford University where he won the Newdigate prize for poetry.
Soon after graduating Ruskin met J. M. W. Turner and decided that he would rescue this great painter from obscurity. This campaign included Ruskin's book Modern Painters I (1843) where he highly praised Turner's work. Ruskin also wrote Modern Painters II (1846) where he championed the pre-Raphaelites.
Ruskin was now considered to be Britain's leading writer on culture and other important books written during this period included The Seven Lamps of Architecture Pre-Raphaelitism The Stones of Venice Architecture and Painting ... Political Economy of Art (1857) and Modern Painters IV
In the 1850s Ruskin became interested in politics and became a supporter of socialism. Between 1854 and 1858 he taught at the Working Men's College that had been founded by Frederick Denison Maurice Charles Kingsley and Thomas Hughes in London . In his lectures Ruskin denounced greed as the main principle guiding English life. In books such as Unto the Last Essays on Political Economy (1862) and Time and Tide (1867), Ruskin argued against competition and self-interest and advocated a form of

    Biography
British writer and art critic with the voice of a Puritan and idealist. A philosopher and social reformer, he influenced public opinion about Gothic architecture, social conditions and the art of his day. Born into the wealthy family of a wine merchant, he had extensive travels as a boy and was privately tutored. He received an Oxford degree in 1842 and won the Newdigate prize in 1839. Ruskin was first published in 1842 with "Modern Painters," which established him as one of the most influential critics of his day. Over the next 17 years, he added numerous more volumes of work to his list of accomplishments. He was the first Slade Professor of Art at Oxford in 1869 and remained until 1879. Ruskin married Euphemia Gray in 1848, an unfortunate union which was annulled. From 1870, Ruskin, with a family history of mental disturbance, had periodic bouts with insanity, and he remained an invalid from 1889 until his death, mentally deranged, on 1/20/1900, Brantwood, England.
