Tras participar en diversas acciones militares, en 1702 abandonó el ejército, al no haber sido aceptado en una promoción de brigadieres, tras lo cual se integró en la vida de la corte. En el terreno político, se mostró contrario a la autocracia de Luis XIV y abogó por un mayor peso y poder de la nobleza en la alta política, lo cual le impidió desempeñar cargos de relevancia. L' Inventaire des titres et papiers du trésor de Claude, duc de Saint-Simon  (1686), redécouvert, permet de mesurer l'ampleur des dignités et des biens qu'amassa le duc Claude.
