Amandine married Casimir Dudevant, an older man on 9/10/1822, and had two children, Maurice on 6/30/1823 and Solange on 9/13/1828. Fame eluded her until she left her husband and kids on 1/04/1831 and headed to Paris. Once there, she lived a bohemian lifestyle, taking outstanding lovers, both male and female, and continuing to write. Her first novel, "Indiana" was published in 1832 under the pseudonym George Sand. Though not an attractive woman, she had a spirit and passion that attracted two of the most romantic figures of her day. In June 1833, she met Alfred de Musset and began a tempestuous love affair that continued until 3/06/1835. She obtained a legal marriage separation in July 1836 and later that year met Frederic Chopin. They carried on a passionate romance which lasted nine years, from May 1838 to 1846. Sand was the daughter of a man of royal ancestry. When she was four, he died and she was unhappily caught in between the conflicts of her mother and grandmother. After three convent schools she went to Nohant to live with her grandmother. There she developed a love of nature and her own free spirit, which she indulged by wearing men's clothing.

The second novel Indiana Indiana the poet Alfred de Musset sent an admiring letter to Sand which marked the beginning of their passionate relationship. At the age of 33 she started an affair with Chopin. The composer, however, did not first consider her attractive. "Something about her repels me," he said to his family. Their relationship ended in 1847 when Sand started to suspect that Chopin had fallen in love with her daughter, Solange. It is also possible, that behind the breakup was Sand's treatment of Solange; she had married the sculptor Auguste Clésinger in 1847 and turned against her mother with him. Chopin was on Solange's side.

Hugo's irreverent jibe about Sand's refusal to conform to the gender conventions of her time can stand as emblematic of her ambiguous position in 1848. On the one hand, she played a decisive role in Ledru-Rollin's government; yet she never had an official position or title, and her labors remained unremunerated. After the revolution failed, she was criticized from the right for her radical position, and from the left for her "cowardly" retreat to Nohant. The events of February caught her off guard. She immediately rushed to Paris, arriving on March 1 and promptly obtained a " laissez-passer " allowing her free access to all the members of the provisional government. Her son's garret, 8 , where she lived, quickly became a central meeting place. Except for one trip to Nohant (March 7 to 21), she spent the entire time in Paris, until May 18, when, following days of unrest, a failed coup, and massive arrests, all hope of a democratic assembly was lost.

Born in Paris to a father of aristocratic lineage and a "common" mother, Sand was raised for much of her childhood by her grandmother at the family estate, Nohant, in the French region of Berry, a setting later used in many of her novels. In 1822, she married Baron Casimir Dudevant, and they had two children, Maurice (b. 1823) and Solange (b. 1828). In 1835, taking the children with her, she left her husband. Her first novel, Rose et Blanche [1831] was written in collaboration with Jules Sandeau, from whom she allegedly took her pen name, Sand. After parting from her husband Sand made less and less a secret of preferring men's clothes to women's, although she continued to dress as a woman for social occasions. This male "disguise" enabled Sand to circulate more freely about Paris, and gave her increased access to venues that might have been denied to a woman of her social standing. This was an exceptional practice for the 19th century, where social codesespecially in the upper classwere of the highest importance. As a consequence Sand lost a good deal of the privileges attached to being a Baroness. Ironically, it was also a part of the mores of this period that women of higher classes could live physically separated from their husbands without losing face, if they didn't show any blatant irregularity to the outer world.
