Of her own novels, La Mare au diable (1846, tr. The Haunted Pool, 1890) and [the master bell-ringers] (1853) are considered masterpieces. Notable also are Indiana (1832, tr. 1881), Mauprat Consuelo (1843, tr. 1846), (1848, tr. Francis the Waif, La Petite Fadette (1849, tr. Fanchon the Cricket, 1864), and (1873, tr. Tales of a Grandmother, 1930), a collection of Breton fairy tales. All these books are distinguished by a romantic love of nature as well as an extravagant moral idealism. She also wrote a number of plays. Much of her work was autobiographical, notably Histoire de ma vie Elle et lui [she and he] (1859), which concerns her life with Musset; and

Sand, George (1804-1876) Amantine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, better known as George Sand, is as infamous for her cigar-in-hand cross-dressing as she is famous for her eighty novels, twenty plays, and numerous political tracts. Sand also claimed an infamous ancestry. Her great-great-grandfather, an eighteenth-century king of Poland, sired out of wedlock her great-grandfather, who in turn fathered an illegitimate daughter, Sand's grandmother, Aurore Dupin de Franceuil. On her father's death, the future writer lived in the worlds of two women who hated each other, her aristocratic grandmother, owner of the estate of Nohant-Vic in Berry, and her mother, daughter of a Parisian bird seller. From her grandmother Sand inherited an independent spirit, and from her mother, a devotion to socialism. Sponsor Message.

George Sand (1804-1876) - Pseudonym of Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin French Romantic writer, who questioned the sexual identity and gender destinies in fiction. Outside the literary world, Sand was noted for her numerous love affairs with such prominent figures as Alfred de Musset "We cannot tear out a single page of our life, but we can throw the whole book in the fire. " (from Mauprat In 1831 Sand started to write for Le Figaro . She contributed Revue des Deux Mondes (1832-41) and (1848), and was a coeditor of (1841). During these years she had acquaintance with several poets, artists, philosophers, and politicians. With her lover Jules Sandeau she wrote in a few weeks a novel, ROSE ET BLANCHE, under the pseudonym Jules Sand. The second novel Indiana Indiana the poet Alfred de Musset sent an admiring letter to Sand which marked the beginning of their passionate relationship. At the age of 33 she started an affair with Chopin. The composer, however, did not first consider her attractive. "Something about her repels me," he said to his family. Their relationship ended in 1847 when Sand started to suspect that Chopin had fallen in love with her daughter, Solange. It is also possible, that behind the breakup was Sand's treatment of Solange; she had married the sculptor Auguste Clésinger in 1847 and turned against her mother with him. Chopin was on Solange's side.

Description
Mauprat (1837) is the romantic tale of a "wild" man civilized by the woman he loves. Deeply engaged with Rousseau's pedagogical treatise Emile, and with contemporary debate concerning inherited and acquired traits and tendencies, Mauprat is an expression of Sand's Utopian vision of a relationship governed by free choice and equality. Naomi Schor's introduction explores these and other aspects of the novel, while Sylvia Raphael's new translation does full justice to the powerfully descriptive qualities of one of George Sand's most exciting and absorbing novels.

Sand, George,
pseudonym of AMANDINE-AURORE-LUCILE (LUCIE) DUDEVANT, DUPIN (b. July 1, 1804, Parisd. June 8, 1876, Nohant, Fr.), French Romantic writer, noted both for her so-called rustic novels and numerous love affairs. In 1822 Aurore married Casimir Dudevant. The first years of the marriage were happy enough, but Aurore soon tired of her well-intentioned but somewhat insensitive husband and sought consolation first in a platonic friendship with a young magistrate and then in a passionate liaison with a neighbour. In January 1831 she left Nohant for Paris, where she found a good friend in Henri de Latouche, the director of Le Figaro, who accepted some of the articles she wrote with Jules Sandeau under the pseudonym Jules Sand. In 1832 she adopted a new pseudonym, George Sand, for Indiana, a novel in which Sandeau had had no part. This novel, which brought her immediate fame, is a passionate protest against the social conventions that bind a wife to her husband against her will and an apologia for a heroine who abandons an unhappy marriage and finds love. In Valentine (1832) and (1833) the ideal of free association is extended to the wider sphere of social and class relationships.
