He is best-known for his writings on the Canadian North , including the poems " The Shooting of Dan McGrew ", "The Law of the Yukon", and " The Cremation of Sam McGee ". His writing was so expressive that his readers took him for a hard-bitten old Klondike prospector, not the later-arriving bank clerk he actually was. In addition to his Yukon works, Service also wrote poetry set in locales as diverse as South Africa Afghanistan , and New Zealand

Robert W Service
I lived from 1874-1958. I was from Canada, and am in the Americas category. Robert William Service was born in Lancashire, England on January 16, 1874 to a Scottish bank clerk and the daughter of an English factory owner. He was raised by his aunts in a small town in Ayrshire. He then moved to Western Canada and subsequently north to the Yukon Territory. During World War 1 he served with the Red Cross on the Western front in the ambulance corps; he was also a war correspondent. Read full description by The Original Home Page of Robert W Service... At the age of 15 he followed his father into the banking business, but in 1896 he emigrated to Canada where he joined his younger brother in an experiment in ranching. The life of a farmer in British Columbia, however, was far from his expectations and after 18 months he set off for California.
For the next 6 years Service drifted up and down the Pacific coast. In 1903, finding himself broke in Vancouver, he applied to and was hired by the Canadian Bank of Commerce and won a posting in Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory.
Here Service found the western life he had sought, with its balance of a frontier sort of social life and the solitude of the northern woods.

DEFINITELY not recommended The Bard Of The Yukon At His Finest! "Songs Of A Sourdough" is Robert Service at his best!. This is nature poetry at its finest. Here the Bard Of The Yukon use picture words that place the reader right in the Yukon of old. As you read you can see the stranger stagger in to the Malamute saloon and feel the fifty below gush of air until he closes the door behind him. You will hear him play the piano and see the ghastly look of the Lady that's known as Lou. You too will jump for the floor when the shooting of Dangerous Dan McGrew starts. You too will hear the Call of The Yukon and understand its Law while you come to appreciate The Younger Son. I bought my first copy of "Songs Of A Sourdough" during my Canadian honeymoon in 1980. From experience I can give you one bit of advice. Do not, I repeat, do not ever pick up this book unless you want to be hooked on Robert Service and his songs forever.

12. The Law Of The Yukon
Text of the poem.

The Law of the Yukon
by Robert W. Service
This is the law of the Yukon, and ever she makes it plain:
"Send not your foolish and feeble; send me your strong and your sane
Strong for the red rage of battle; sane for I harry them sore;
Send me men girt for the combat, men who are grit to the core;
Swift as the panther in triumph, fierce as the bear in defeat,
Sired of a bulldog parent, steeled in the furnace heat.
Send me the best of your breeding, lend me your chosen ones;
Them will I take to my bosom, them will I call my sons;
Them will I gild with my treasure, them will I glut with my meat;
But the others the misfits, the failures I trample under my feet.
Dissolute, damned and despairful, crippled and palsied and slain, Ye would send me the spawn of your gutters Go! take back your spawn again. "Wild and wide are my borders, stern as death is my sway; From my ruthless throne I have ruled alone for a million years and a day; Hugging my mighty treasure, waiting for man to come, Till he swept like a turbid torrent, and after him swept the scum.

Special: 2 tickets and room for $99 Come and celebrate the bard's 130th birthday in the town where he wrote some of his best-known poems. For more information, contact Doug Bell There wasn't a fus when this fellow came to town. There sure was when he left. He loved life, language, words, and space. In Whitehorse 1904, he became known as "the solitary walker." Nothing pleased him more than losing himself in the "great wild silence" which he was to describe as "the final word in desolation" with an "end-of-the-world feeling." One of his biographers said "all his life, Robert Service was afflicted by a restlessness and a wanderlust that was to take him to the ends of the earth." He stepped on Canadian soil in April 1896 prophetically perhaps, in the year gold was found in the Klondike. He had $15 in his pocket and visions of becoming a cowboy. He roamed the land at will for eight years, ending up broke in Vancouver. His earlier banking experience saved him... the Bank of Commerce in Victoria hired him. Within a year they transferred him. He loved Whitehorse in 1904. He often entertained at church and other social events, reciting classic poetry. A friend encouraged him to write his own. He loved the idea.
