Robert W. Service
ONALD G. F RENCH , in the 'Globe Magazine.' [Page 360] R OBERT W. SERVICE is not a Canadian poet in the truest sense of the term. He was not born in Canada, nor did he arrive in this land in early childhood and grow up in a Canadian environment. He was born in Lancashire, England, in 1876, and when six years of age moved to Scotland with his parents. He was educated in the city of Glasgow, his higher education being received in the Hillhead High School, and in the University of Glasgow. At the age of twenty, Mr. Service came to Canada and made his way westward from city to city, until he arrived at Victoria, B.C. The next five years he wandered back and forth on the Pacific coast, travelling as far south as Mexico, residing temporarily in every city of importance, and learning by hard, personal experience, some of the deepest lessons of life. Finally he became a clerk in the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Victoria, and subsequently was stationed at other branches in Vancouver, Kamloops, and White Horse in the Yukon District.

Robert William Service Poems
Born in Preston, in the English county of Lancashire, at the head the estuary of the river Ribble, on January 16, 1874. He grew up the first born child of a bank cashier wed to the daughter of a wealthy distillery family, Sarah Emil Parker.
Five years later, with four younger siblings now vying for parental attention, he went to live with paternal grandfather, the postmaster at Kilwinning, Ayrshire in Scotland where three maiden aunts waited to dote over him! He composed his first poem there - on his sixth birthday.
Today there is a brass plaque outside a senior citizens home at the Kilwinning Main Street location where their house once stood. The plaque mentions the poem, because you see he became the celebrated bard of the Yukon, Robert William Service, who told us of "The Shooting of Dan McGrew", "The Cremation of Sam McGee", "The Harpy", "The Spell of the Yukon".
By 1883 the Service family had moved from Preston, Lancashire north of the border to Scotland's largest city, Glasgow. So, Robert, now nine years old, rejoined the family circle which now had ...

Robert William Service, the renowned poet of the Yukon, was born in Lancashire, England, on January 16, 1874. The son of a bank cashier, Service was the eldest of four siblings. At the age of five, Service went to Scotland to live with his grandfather and three young aunts, who showered him with attention. A year later, on his sixth birthday, he wrote his first poem. Service rejoined his family in 1883 when they moved north to Glasgow, Scotland. He attended several of Scotland’s finest schools, where he developed a deep interest in books and poetry, along with a sharp wit and a way with words. A well-rounded teenager, Service also played fullback on his high school’s rugby team. Service’s innate curiosity and fondness for adventure stories inspired an urge to travelto go off to sea and to see the world. Although his parents discouraged this adolescent ambition, his desire wasn’t extinguished (and would one day be fulfilled). Service bided his time with assorted jobsone at a shipping office that soon closed down, then another following his father’s footsteps in a position at a suburban branch of the Commercial Bank of Scotland. Working under light supervision, Service managed to pass the day with reading material he’d snuck in: Robert Browning Lord Alfred Tennyson , and John Keats Service developed into an excellent student of poetry, and attended the University of Glasgow to study English Literature. He was quickly identified as one of the brightest in his class, though he also proved to be a bit audacious. His essay on Ophelia's questionable "purity" in
