Ernest Thompson Seton and the Woodcraft Indians
by Christiaan P. Vorkink
"It would help bring together young people from various so-called stations, break down the barriers that society has foolishly placed upon them, and establish in their minds when they are young a finer kind of humanity, a real understanding that the important thing is the association of a human spirit."

They were among the many Bears that found a desirable home in the country about the Fountain Hotel. Page 5 : Johnny set up a whine at once and got behind his mother. She uttered a deep growl, and all her back hair stood on end. Mine did too, but I kept as still as possible. With stately tread the Grizzly came on. His vast shoulders sliding along his sides, and his silvery robe swaying at each tread, like the trappings on an elephant, gave an impression of power that was appalling. [Illustration] Johnny began to whine more loudly, and I fully sympathized with him now, though I did not join in. After a moment's hesitation Grumpy turned to her noisy cub and said something that sounded to me like two or three short coughs

Seton, Ernest Thompson (1860-1946) Naturalist, writer. Born in County Durham, England, he moved to Canada with his family at age five, settling on a farm near Lindsay, Ontario, and then moving to Toronto, where he was educated at Toronto Collegiate and the Ontario College of Art. He then studied at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in London as a scholarship student, all the while pursuing his interest in natural history. Upon his return from England in 1882, in ill health, he joined his brother on a homestead in Manitoba just east of Carberry. He always regarded the next five years as his "golden days," as he walked around the Carberry countryside taking notes and making sketches. At Carberry he also began to write. In 1891 he published The Birds of Manitoba , which in 1892 led to his appointment as Provincial Naturalist by the Manitoba government. In the early 1890s he made several trips to Paris to study art, discovering upon his return to Manitoba that settlement had disrupted much of the natural habitat. Wild Animals I Have Known (1898) was the publication that made Seton famous. It was the first successful attempt to present animals realistically in story form. In 1902 he organized the Woodcraft Indians, a boys' organization, and wrote a manual

This is yet another park along a branch of the Don River that's popular for jogging cycling walking horse riding and picnicking. There's also an archery range here. But off the beaten (and paved) path, there are other things to see here that most people might not be aware of. For naturalists, there's a nice wetlands area surrounded by pine woods hidden away in the corner between the Science Center and Eglinton Avenue. But it's not as wild an area as you might think. The ducks and geese will come up to you expecting a snack. Ernest Thompson Seton was born August 14, 1860, in South Shields, Durham, England. Although he died an American citizen on October 23, 1946, much of his childhood was spent in Toronto. As a young boy Seton wandered through the ravines of Toronto observing animals in their natural habitat; often painting and sketching these scenes. In 1897, he won a gold medal from the Ontario College of Art , and received a scholarship to the Royal Academy in London, England. Seton was recognized as the pre-eminent naturalist of the early twentieth century, and furthered this cause by forming the Woodcraft Indians in 1902. Seton's idea to teach boys about Indian lore and the wilderness was later adopted by

Seton, Ernest Thompson,
original name ERNEST EVAN THOMPSON, also called ERNEST E. THOMPSON, or ERNEST SETON-THOMPSON (b. Aug. 14, 1860, South Shields, Durham, Eng.d. Oct. 23, 1946, Seton Village, Santa Fe, N.M., U.S.), naturalist and writer, who was an early practitioner of the modern school of animal-fiction writing. Seton was raised in North America, his family having emigrated to Canada in 1866. Drawn to nature, Seton resisted his family's attempt to make an artist of him. He gained experience as a naturalist by trailing and hunting in the prairie country of Manitoba in the final years of the 19th century. He used this knowledge as the basis for his animal stories. His artistic training enabled him to earn a living for a time as an illustrator of wild animals. He collected his stories into his most popular book, Wild Animals I Have Known (1898). He continued to write such books into the 1940s. Deeply concerned with the future of the prairie, Seton fought vigorously to establish reservations for Indians and parks for animals threatened by extinction. In order to provide children with the opportunities for nature study, he founded the Woodcraft Indians in 1902 and later was chairman of the committee that established the Boy Scouts of America.
