Anna Mary Sewell was born in Great Yarmouth Norfolk, England into a devoutly Quaker family. Her father was Isaac Phillip Sewell (1793-1879), and her mother, Mary Wright Sewell (1798 - 1884) was a successful author of children's books. Anna Sewell had one sibling,a younger brother named Philip Sewell (1822–1906) who worked as a construction engineer in Europe , building railways in Spain and elsewhere, before settling back in Norfolk and working as a banker. Anna Sewell was largely educated at home, a regime heavily influenced by her mother's religious and educational convictions. When Anna was twelve years old, the family moved to Stoke Newington , where Sewell attended school for the first time and gained instruction in areas new to her such as mathematics and foreign languages. Two years later, however, she slipped while walking home from school and severely injured both of her ankles. Her father took a job in Brighton in 1836, partly in the hope that the climate there would help to cure her. Despite this, and most likely because of mistreatment of her injury, Sewell was lame for the rest of her life and was unable to stand without a crutch or to walk for any length of time. For greater mobility, she frequently used horse-drawn carriages, which contributed to her love of

Anna Sewell (1820-1878) , English author wrote Black Beauty While I was young I lived upon my mothers milk, as I could not eat grass. In the daytime I ran by her side, and at night I lay down close by her. When it was hot we used to stand by the pond in the shade of the trees, and when it was cold we had a nice warm shed near the grove. I hope you will grow up gentle and good, and never learn bad ways; do your work with a good will, lift your feet up well when you trot, and never bite or kick even in play. I have never forgotten my mothers advice; I knew she was a wise old horse, and our master thought a great deal of her. Thus the now-iconic horse Black Beauty begins the narration of his autobiography. Anna Sewell wrote her only novel near the end of her life but for over one hundred years since it has been counted among the classics of childrens literature. As a universally appealing and timeless tale it has inspired sequels by other authors and television and feature film adaptations. Anna Sewell was born on 30 March 1820 in Great Yarmouth, County Norfolk, England. Her parents were Mary Wright Sewell (1797-1884) and Isaac Sewell (1793-1878) and she had a younger brother, Phillip, born in 1822.

Anna Sewell
Anna Sewell was born on March 30th, 1820 in Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, the daughter of a writer and a bank manager, both devoted Quakers. Following an accident as a child, Anna became crippled and experienced ill health most of her life. She got around by using horse-drawn carriages. Sewell's mother, a successful writer of juvenile fiction, allowed Sewell to edit her texts. "I never yet could make out why men are so fond of this sport; they often hurt themselves, often spoil good horses, and tear up the fields, and all for a hare, or a fox, or a stag, that they could get more easily some other way; but we are only horses, and don't know." ( Black Beauty Sewell began writing her first and only book, Black Beauty (1877), while bedridden. Told from the horses' perspective, Sewell wrote the book with hopes of changing the public's attitude about the cruelty that was regularly inflicted on horses at the time of the book's writing. "We call them dumb animals, and so they are, for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words." (

Black Beauty is a tender tale filled with life lessons and brimming with warm memories and experiences from a horses' point of view. It will touch your heart with its many fine moments as well as suspenseful situations. A fine tale that shows the cruelty some humans can inflict on animals, as well as the kindness and generosity we would all strive to achieve. An enduring classic loved by anyone who loves animals.~Submitted by Virginia G. Wimmer.
